1971 BAY WINDOW T2 VW CAMPERVAN / CAMPER. ALFA ROMEO ENGINE

 Meet Claude. our very much loved VW bay window camper van.  

We have owned Claude since we imported him from France last September and we are very sadly having to sell him due to us (unexpectedly) falling pregnant with our third child!

We imported him last September from France and have registered him over here. put him through his first MOT and got road tax exemption on him too.   He is a solid bus. originally a minibus. left hand drive of course and has been well looked after.  

He passed his first ever MOT with flying colours with no advisories and everyone who has seen him says he's a great bus. We have given him a bit of a make over internally and he now has a brand new Bluebird rock and roll bed. two new 3 point seat belts in the back and new interior door cards in beige in the back.   We have insulated and carpeted and changed the speedo from Kph to mph.   He has also been Waxoyled underneath by Sussex Kampers. There is still stuff to do (isn't there always) so plenty of room to create your own van and leave your mark.

So here are the technical bits -

1971 VW Bay Window converted to Alfa Romeo Boxer 1. 5cc watercooled engine (approx 100 bhp) painted in VW Mango Green
Has an Alfa boxer engine conversion that was put in by the previous owner. The engine had been rebuilt and hasn`t done a massive mileage since- has recently had new cam belts. water pump. valves checked and new alternator belt. (all by previous owner) It has a golf radiator with scoop and air box above with electric fan between the chassis rails. This is also linked to a golf heater matrix and boat fan to provide better heating than a standard vw bus. Gearbox is from a vw type 3 with fairly long gearing. Full new clutch kit. release bearing and pilot bush. Almost new Goodyear tyres. Carbs are Twin Dellorto 40`s with standard air cleaner. (All from previous owner)

The bus has two vinyl sunroofs. small one over cab and then a large one in the back.   Bumpers are pre 72 but have also been smoothed out. Welded in front beam adjusters with gas shocks- currently slightly lowered.
Lots of body welding done -New inner outer and centre sills replaced or welded (All by previous owner)

Whole new front end panel with inner and outer lower panels. rear arch front. sliding door lower and other bits. so all nice and solid. (All by previous owner)

Lower half has been resprayed and looks ok but work is not perfect and has various minor faults all over the van.

Front suspension has been redone with gas shocks new steering idler pin. all new drag links and tie rods etc and professionally realigned. New brake hoses all round and servo hoses. Rear brakes and cylinders replaced completely. fronts in good shape. stops very well. (Again. all done by previous owner)

Claude is NOT a show bus but he is solid.   He. like most VW campers of the same age has a couple of problem areas.   The first being a spot of *whispers* rust on the front right wheel arch and secondly an issue with *whispers again* possible filler on the right hand side towards the back!  ( I will post some pics of these two areas asap) Sussex Kampers in Dallington have looked after Claude and recently quoted approx £300 to sort the filler issue.   We haven't attempted to repaint or cover these areas as we would rather the new owner saw Claude in all his glory! 

We are gutted to be selling Claude as we haven't even used him to camp in yet. but with another child on the way. he just isn't practical (boring) enough for family life :0( 

He really is a great bus and if you are looking for a solid van to create your own vw experience than Claude is ideal.   Sussex Kampers in Dallington know him well if you need to speak to a specialist but we advise viewing our bus to get your own opinion.   He does come with a box of bits and pieces. a tin of Mango green paint for 'touch ups' and poss a couple of books as well.
