1988 CITROEN 2CV6 DOLLY YELLOW/MAROON

 Lovely 1998 Citroen 2cv in the most desirable colour scheme of 'Plums and Custard'. I bought this for the wife last year as an anniversary present as she had wanted one (especially in this colour) for years. Barely driven. it's been sitting in the garage so I only think its fair to let her go (not the wife. the Dolly).

When I bought it. I took my mechanic up to Grimsby. where the car had been all its life. and he was generous in his praise for the fact that the chassis is totally solid with no welding having ever been done and no rust problems. The vendor told me that it was probably down to the fact that the car had been sitting at the back of a Citroen showroom for 8 years of its life.

Time has taken its toll. but there are plenty of 2cv specialists around so we'll start with the bad bits.

- The dashboard sound proofing has dried out and has started to crack. kits are less than £40.
- MOT expires at the end of January but that's not the reason I am selling and. if I get time. it will come with a fresh 12 month's MOT but the reserve price will go up accordingly. Again. my mechanic has had a good look and reckons that the front bushes need replacing (less than £100)
- The clutch makes a grinding noise. probably the clutch release bearing (£35) as the noise goes when you get into fourth gear and hit the giddy heights of 50mph.
- Over the years. the paint has gone flat. tiny rust bubbles. scratches and scrapes have been touched up badly. I considered covering the car in period stickers but that wouldn't be fair on the new owner.

Good bits
- Totally solid. never welded. never restored
- Interesting history which I will gladly tell any prospective purchaser all about
- The seats were recovered last year and are immaculate with no sagging
- The roof has been replaced
- Everything works
- There has never been a radio in the car so no nasty holes or fittings

I am trying to be totally honest here and any prospective buyer must know that a 25 year old Citroen with no rust problems is extremely rare and I got a bargain when I bought it so have set the reserve as to exactly what the car owes me - £1650. As I said. if I get time to get a new MOT on here then its likely that the reserve will be nearer £2000.

Just a note that my mechanic drove 'Fifi' back from Grimsby with a great big smile on his face and he really wants me to keep the car so he can 'fiddle' and get her painted - aiming to sell in the summer for £5k.

I have had a couple of 2cv experts come and see the car. The following points should be noted:- The floor will need some welding for its MOT (no holes yet). there is work that has been done just below the o/s passenger door - not the best job in the world and will need redoing. the usual rotten bonnet hinge isn't at all rotten on this car. One guy. who sells classics. said that with £500 of work. the car will be worth £4k. Please bear this is mind as I don't want the winning bidder to think he has purchased a totally mint example.
