1970 MORGAN 4/4 two seater "TOYMOG" 

After 10 + years of rebuilding it is now powered by a Toyota 22R engine and automatic transmission. in other ways looking as a stock 4/4. Everything is new or rebuilt using Morgan or Toyota parts. I have used a custom interior black vinyl with burgundy trim. If you would like to follow the rebuild read the following.

I used a new frame with doublers where Fred Sisson suggested. I bought a new cross frame up front. All front end parts where rebuilt or replaced with Morgan parts. I used new Plus 4 coil springs and the "thingy" type bearings. I have used the original front spindles. rebuilt rotors. calipers and new pads. I finished off with a Gemmer steering box. MGB steering shaft. new U joints and an after market steering wheel. All tye rod ends where replaced.

The original rear end was used as it was not far from the ratio of the Cortina. I replaced the outer seals and bearings but left the center member alone. The original rear springs where reworked and used. A new drive shaft was custom made and balanced with new U joints at both ends. The rear drums where trued up and new shoes and cylinders used. I tied the brakes system up with a new Morgan dual master cylinder and all new fluid lines. two wheels up front and two wheels at rear. The original type emergency brake cable set up was used.

The new body frame arrived from the UK with new hinges and locks. I. (a sheet metal man) metal clad the new body frame and placed it on the waiting chassis. The original wings. bonnet and grille shell are used after making repairs. The front bumper is new on a custom frame. The badge bar and custom fog light mounts where fabricated and chromed. The rear bumper was rechromed but hit from behind and bent. It still has some wrinkles in it at the bolt mounting point but is mostly hidden by the custom crash bar I have installed at the rear. Two bolts and an electrical plug can be removed and the bar taken off for car shows if needed. There are digital running and brake lights at the rear with the bar supporting the registration plates and light.

A custom radiator about the same area as the Toyota car was made one core deep that extends to the bottom of the frame in front of the Toyota fan. I then installed the rebuilt Toyota engine and the original automatic transmission in the car for the last time on mounts made from Morgan and Toyota parts. The engine has been rebuilt stock. has a custom exhaust. electric fuel pump. polished valve cover. new Weber carburetor. fuel pressure regulator and gauge. The transmission had only 169. 00 km on it so only needed service. Inside the gas pedal has the original Morgan ball added to the original Toyota unit to give it the Morgan look. Only single brake pedal and the shifter are a give away to the automatic transmission. A Mini heater keeps things warm as needed.

The electrics where laid out on a table and components reworked from the Toyota. Morgan and Ford stuff. Everything now works through Toyota relays and fuses. The battery is fed through a GM alternator. The Toyota speedometer cable was adapted to the Morgan clock. The dash is Morgan. with an after market temperature gauge. alternator light and the O/D switch added.

The interior is custom to accept the automatic transmission. The seats are cut down MGB and have some adjustments. Custom door panels have been added for road maps etc. There is a small space under each seat for out of sight storage. The interior is either in rug or vinyl front to back in black with burgundy trim.

The windshield. burgundy trimmed side curtains and burgundy top are original and along with the rear bumper is the reason I have put my care in category #2 There is a burgundy toneau cover and a burgundy luggage space cover. The top bows are attached to the car and use the " not certified" roll bar as a top bow. ( I have the original bow to go with the car). The car has 5 new 72 stainless steel spoke. tubless. wire wheels. tires and knock offs.

The car was painted professionally in "White Chocolate Metallic" ( a Ford color ) and has so far only a very few marks from stones. The under body was painted black as the car was built and the wings are undercoated. I have working pictures of everything done to the car and am proud of the finished product. I have had to change only one fuse since I put it on the road and it is a pleasure to drive especially in traffic. It will drive at today's highway speeds.
