History:
I am pleased to offer this early 1956 MGA Roadster. The car has a long history in the San Francisco Bay Area and has no major issues other than having being rehabilitated from a 40 year slumber. This MGA has an interesting and wonderful history.

My friend Tim's mother. Aileen Johnson. purchased this MGA new in Berkeley. CA in 1956. Still unwed. she was a very cool woman with a passion for driving who wanted an English roadster to enjoy as a daily driver. She came across this MGA at a local dealership. purchased it. and the love affair began. Not only did Aileen enjoy driving it to and from work. she decided to enter it into local road races common on the West Coast during the late 1950's. Rather uncommon to find a woman driver with such a passion for racing in a predominately male sport. she enjoyed relative success racing this little MGA from 1956-1961. Small placards from events she entered are pasted to the dash of this little roadster. Also included in the sale is the hand-painted fender with her number she would bolt onto the car before events. Her initials AJ '56 are clearly visible on this fender (please see pic).

In the early 1960's. Aileen got married. changed her last name to Williams and my friend Tim was born. With a new family. the MGA was put into storage. where it sat until recently. Sometime during the 1970's. the MGA spent a few years outside covered. but was overall very well preserved. In the 80's it was moved indoors again and is now in my shop. Due to a shift in priorities and a loss of my warehouse space. I am reluctantly offering her for sale.

She sports her original paint. and the original motor was rebuilt (both the bottom and top-end were redone before being put into storage). and is completely original. After a little freshening and tuning. she fired right up and runs great.
Fully documented from day one. this is a rare opportunity to buy an MGA with a very rich history.

As a life-long West Coast car from a dry climate. it is as original. straight. and very solid. without accidents. All sheet metal is original and straight. having excellent panel fit/gaps throughout. Sporting it's original Irish White paint. this MGA is exceptionally original and damage free showing only minimal wear. The car runs and drives well. The interior has not been abused with a few rips in the red leather. and the top has a small tear about three inches long. The engine bay is clean and correct. The car has been lightly driven since I've owned it and all systems are working properly. It is sold with a clear California title. Offered at a very fair reserve.

NOTABLE ATTRIBUTES:
One Owner with a well documented history
Interesting local road race history
Has original spare tire with original tire. jack. tool kit

Mechanicals:
This car has very good mechanicals since all major components are in correct working order. The original engine starts very easily. runs strong and smoothly. It does not smoke and has good compression. The original 4spd. gearbox is quiet in all gears and shifts smoothly. The car is very smooth at speed. The car responds quickly and accurately to all driver inputs. The brake system is in good order and the car stops well. I have replaced the master cylinder due to dried seals. all of the wheel cylinders. the rubber brake lines. and clutch slave cylinder. and clutch slave cylinder rubber line. The shoes may need to be replaced or at least adjusted.

Body. Paint. and Chrome:
This MGA sports it's original paint which is in decent shape and shows wear. Please see photos. The car has excellent eye appeal and always attracts admirers. It is extremely original. Again. it has never had any serious panel damage or chassis damage. Since the car has not had any adverse history and has such good body panels. the panel fit is excellent. The floors. frame rails and sheet metal are solid. Only rust to note is pictured where water had collected in the rocker panel in front of the rear wheel. It is relatively minor. only needing a very small patch on the outer panel and the correct patch panels are included with the sale. The quarter panels and trunk are rust free other than light scale from air. The chrome shows age. has minor pitting. and is in decent condition. All lenses are present and in good vintage condition. The windshield and glass are great.

Interior:
The entire interior is original and correct. All gauges are functional and working correctly. The seats are structurally solid and the leather show some age commiserate with use and have rips. At the time the car was raced the carpet was taken out. The rip in the top may be able to be fixed or it will need to be replaced but it is complete and has not been abused.

Wheels and Tires:
The original matched set of wire wheels are true and straight. It has old bias-ply Dunlop Gold Cup tires from the 60's. The car exhibits no shimmy or shake at speed. The Dunlops do have some checking and should be replaced for normal driving.

Summaration:
This MGA is an excellent candidate for full restoration or to drive as a survivor; it's history makes it a pretty rare car. It is extremely original and an honest car in all aspects showing only minor wear. It has only cosmetic issues and is a survivor. It runs like a top and is very smooth and strong. This particular MGA has a consistent fit and finish throughout and will maintain it's quality for years to come.
