I have up for sale a 1960 Rambler American with VINTAGE California PLATES!!! The plates on this car are good and active with the CA DMV and will come with the car. I have owned this car since I was 16 and this is a VERY difficult decision to part with it. My late father bought it for me as my first car when I was a teen. but I just have too many projects and not enough savings to give this little bathtub the time and attention it needs! This car would make a great restoration candidate or would be an excellent rockabilly/rat rod. Engine is a 196 Flathead 6 with 3-speed column shift manual transmission. This car is mostly all original down to the chrome and engine block.

The following is the list of all that has been done to it.

Engine and transmission were fully rebuilt with less than 500 miles on rebuild. Actual mileage is just under 69. 00! Engine was bored 20. over and pistons from a later model AMC were used. Engine has a little more power than it originally did as a result and sounds strong! Engine and transmission are numbers matching for this vehicle. In addition to rebuild. engine and transmission were stripped down and repainted/refinished. All gaskets including head gasket was replaced.

Transmission has brand new mounts. transmission crossmember. throw out bearing. clutch kit. and gear oil was changed out.

New water pump. fuel pump. and fuel lines with additional fuel filter.

Gas tank and radiator are original and were both professionally cleaned and refinished.

Rebuilt drum brakes and master cylinder and NOS E-brake cable

Brand new battery. plugs. wires. and rebuilt distributor.

Brand new ballast and NOS Vintage Voltage regulator from AMC!!!

BRAND NEW carburetor!

Brand new front u-joint (VERY HARD TO FIND PART FOR THIS CAR)

New brake hoses and restored rear end. Leaf springs were sanded and cleaned and repacked with new padding. New rear end bushings in rear shackles and new rear shocks.
Rear end was stripped to bare metal and repainted with rust resistant paint and given new gear oil.

New front end bushings.

Brand new NOS turn signal lenses and rear brake light lenses.
Car had BRAND NEW door and trunk weatherstripping (just rubber for outsides of doors and trunk).

The body is in overall ok shape. It has rust which has been patched up with fiberglass (e. g. rocker and fenders) I have a set of NOS rocker panels and a VERY GOOD set of fenders to go with this car. These parts alone are worth $700 as they are EXTINCT! I also have a new rear panel for under the trunk deck as shown in photos to replace original which has some patched up rust. Replacement panel is free of any rust or damage. The floor boards do have rust in them and will need to have new metal spot welded The hole in passenger side is about the size of a softball and is patched up with fiberglass to keep it from spreading. The hole on drivers side is a little bigger. Both are repairable at any body shop or metal shop. The hole on floorboard shown in pictures are access holes from the factory and are supposed to be there (to access master cylinder and brake fluid. etc). I get this question a lot. This was common for these cars. The wheels including FULL SIZE spare tire were sandblasted and then primered and then fitted with brand new tires!! The original hubcaps and beauty rings really make this car stand out and shine beautifully!

The chrome on this car is largely original and in great driver. almost show quality. The bumpers and bumper guards were professionally re-plated and look dazzling!! I took the mounts for the bumpers and had them sandblasted and repainted with rust resistant paint and mounted them with BRAND NEW washers. nuts. and bolts and license plate lights.

Everything works on this car from the original AM radio and NOS dash clock. to the dome lights. low beams. high beams. turn signals. brake lights. parking lights. and horn.

The following things still need to be done to this car to make it a daily driver. The clutch pedal needs to be adjusted up just a tiny bit. It has good pressure and can drive easily around town and cruise at 70 mph. however getting started in first gear and when using reverse she starts grabbing a little bit. I am unsure of how to fix this. but am sure it can be corrected. The gauges are not working due to a faulty instrument voltage regulator. I have a new one that comes with the car along with a BRAND NEW fuel sending unit for the gas tank which will need to be installed. The drivers side rear wheel needs new wheel studs as the old ones are slightly worn.

This car also comes with a lot of literature I have collected including dealer color brochures. wiring diagrams. two FULL service manuals to aid in your restoration (reprints of the original ones used by AMC servicemen) and numerous receipt's for parts I have purchased. I have additional pictures of the work being done to this car that is mentioned above as proof. When you see this vehicle and hear it run. I am sure your doubts will be squashed.

My asking price is $5200 OBO which will include the extra parts and literature. You are essentially getting a great restoration project with a HUGE head start having most all of the difficult work done for you already. I have put more than double into this car already so I am taking a huge loss by selling it and a huge heartbreak. This car WILL TURN HEADS. especially with the half moon covers over the headlights!
