Among the first of BMW's grand touring coupes, the 2800CS was one of the forerunners of the company's The Ultimate Driving Machine advertising tagline. This seldom-seen example is one of 183 made for export to the US during its final model year, 1971, and one of 641 2800CS models brought here between 1969 and 1971.

Fifty years on and it's here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. Made in BMW's factory in Munich, West Germany, the car has had at least one respray in the original Sahara Beige. The paint and trim are in overall very good order but at close range, one can find some minor blemishes. The body is straight, the car's chrome wraparound bumpers fit tightly to the body and come with overriders. The engine bay is extremely tidy while the cargo area is good shape.

With its flat beltline and slim roof pillars, the car's greenhouse feels light and airy and driver visibility is not hampered to any quarter.

This BMW rolls on Michelin Alpin radials, size 205/55ZR16 at all four corners and each one is mounted on newer Aplina style wheels. The wheels are in excellent condition while the tires are in very good shape.

Under that forward-hinged hood is a rebuilt 2.8L inline six-cylinder engine with dual Weber carburetors (code M30B28V). The engine was reportedly rebuilt sometime prior to May 2013. Backing up this motor is a three-speed automatic transmission (most of the E9s came with a four-speed manual) and a 3.54:1 rear end. A new heater core installed prior to May 2013 and the car is equpeemd with air conditioning but is inoperable.

Inside, the tobacco interior is in overall good original condition. There are rips in the driver's side bucket seat but overall, the front buckets and rear bench are in great shape. The matching carpet and headliner are in good order while a three-spoke steering wheel, one of BMW's hallmarks, frames a dashboard with full instrumentation and in very good order but the horn is inoperable. The center console looks great, as does the console-mounted shifter. An aftermarket stereo, Alpine head unit with AM/FM and CD capability, with at least two Kenwood speakers in the rear package shelf, completes the interior.

The first of the E9 coupés, the 2800 CS, replaced the 2000 C and 2000 CS in 1968. The lead designer was Wilhelm Hofmeister. The wheelbase and length were increased to allow the engine bay to be long enough to accommodate the new straight-six engine code-named M30, and the front of the car was restyled to resemble the E3 sedan. The rear axle, however, remained the same as that used in the lesser “Neue Klasse” models and the rear brakes were initially drums - meaning that the 2800 saloon was a better performing car, as it was also lighter. The CS' advantages were thus strictly optical to begin with. The 2800 CS used the 2.8L version of the engine used in the E3 sedans. The engine produced 168 horsepower at 6000 rpm.

Not only was the 2800 CS lighter than the preceding 2000 CS, but it also had a smaller frontal aspect, further increasing the performance advantage.

Competition to this BMW in 1971 included Jaguar's E-Type, Mercedes-Benz's 280SL and Porsche's 911E.

If you desire a classic BMW that is not a 2002, this one might be your ticket. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check this 2800CS for yourself.
