Description

1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

For 1986, there were four distinct body styles available. The base model Sport Coupe was still available with the same general body panels that it had since 1981 but featured new "aero" side mirrors similar to those on Camaros and Corvettes of the 1980s. New for the 1986 model year was a Luxury Sport model that had a revised front fascia, new "aero" side mirrors, and an updated sleek-looking rear fascia. The LS front fascia included "Euro" headlights with removable bulbs in a glass composite headlamp housing, versus the smaller sealed beam glass headlights of previous years. The rear bumper of the LS no longer had a "notch" between the bumper and trunk, and the taillights wrapped around so that they were visible from the sides of the car. The Super Sport model for 1986 incorporated the "aero" mirrors, yet still utilized the prior year's styling for the rear bumper.

This once mild-mannered Monte Carlo SS now contains the who's who of automotive go fast parts. All the while keeping an unassuming allure about it with the exception of a reverse scooped cowl hood. Most passersby would never think this G-body notchback would be ready to hand out ass whoopins galore. Prepare yourself to be both startled and pleasantly surprised.

Exterior
Paint code 11U, White in layman's terms, adorns the exterior of this car, and it has few faults to this respray. Absolutely no rust, few faults and looking as clean as the day it left the assembly line. This two-door model features the standard issue notchback style rear window, rear deck lid spoiler, and a blacked-out grille and headlight bezels with high output headlights. A trio of racing stripes race around the below belt line of this car and they are in red, burgundy, and black and get wider the lower you go. Noted on all 4 corners are the 16" quasi honeycombed mag style 5 bolt wheels with Cooper Cobra rubber wrapping them. A Goodmark steel cowl hood has been installed and is the only clue as to what lurks beneath it.

Interior
Maroon cloth buckets with smooth maroon vinyl bolsters are in front, and these flank a maroon center console with a storage box, housing the automatic T handle shifter. We make note of all the chromed toggles and bezels that look just as nice as when they were new. In the rear is a pattern matching bench and it is fade free and pristine, hardly used. Carpet is showroom and is thick pile and beautiful all the while protected by carpeted GM floor mats. The 80's square and rectangle design applies to the original dash, very clean with the addition of a Dakota Digital Retro instrument cluster. A tight maroon headliner hangs above and sports a working dome light.

Drivetrain
Lifting open the Goodmark hood we are met with the heart and soul of this wolf in sheep's clothing. Resting between the inner fenders is a Blueprint 400ci V8 crate engine rated at 508 tire shredding horsepower. The mill is equipped with a SFI balancer and flexplate, a single plane intake, Demon 850cfm 4bbl carburetor, Edelbrock water pump, a HEI distributor with Davis coil, and American Racing 1 3/4" stainless headers. An aluminum radiator, dual electric fans and Evans waterless cooler keep temperatures under control. A CVF serpentine belt drive system with a 100amp alternator has been added for reliability and bling factors. A rebuilt 700R4 4-speed automatic is on the back and has a 10" Trans Specialties lockup converter along with a Bowler lockup controller and sends power back to a 10-bolt rear axle through a driveshaft with new 1310 SKF u-joints.

Undercarriage
Black undercoating covers the frame, floors and suspension components with only minor surface rust showing here and there. Power disc brakes on the front and power drums on the rear provide the whooah factor and power steering is noted along with a new steering box, power steering pump and Jeep intermediate shaft that eliminates the rag joint. Dual exhaust in stainless form snakes back from the headers and stainless mufflers then exits with polished tips at the rear of the car. Independent coil sprung front suspension is on along with a 4-link coil sprung suspension with tubular control arms on the rear. We note a cast aluminum transmission pan as well as braided AN lines for the B&M Super Cooler.

Drive-Ability
A twist of the key and the 400 cuber instantly fired to life. My partner in crime and crack decoder was in the midst of a post lunchtime food coma so I took the wheel to show off my driving prowess. I was met with unlimited acceleration, firm crisp shifting from the 4-speed automatic and great braking. All functions were operational at the time of my drive and lest I forget, when I got heavy with my boot, spinning the tires was done with ease.

An unassuming wolf in sheep's clothing with the only give away being the cowl scooped hood. Tons of mechanical and performance upgrades along with a beautiful body and clean interior this car was built with attention to all details. I almost pulled the trigger on this one myself, but I'm going to leave it for you as both my license and marriage would be suspended if it came to my home.
