Low Mileage Original: 1968 MGC Roadster!

With over half a Million sold between 1962 and 1980. every automobile enthusiast should be familiar with the iconic MGB. Unknown to most. however. is the rare 1967-69 MGC. Conceived as a replacement for the aging Austin Healey 3000 by BMC brass who felt the need to continue offering a 6-cylinder sports car in their lineup. the "C" was subsequently fitted with an engine originally developed for the 3-liter Austin saloon.

With little to distinguish it outwardly from its smaller cousin. except for 15-inch road wheels and a chrome-trimmed hood bulge on the lightweight aluminum bonnet. the "C" was not a smashing sales success. Only 4. 44 MGC Roadsters were made; about half of them were earmarked for U. S. delivery.

Of those few. even fewer have survived the four-and-a-half decades since. Many were eaten alive by the deadly rust cancer. others have been driven hard and put away wet until finally moving on to the great boneyeard in the sky. Finding a superbly preserved. low-mileage example has become a very rare occurrence. indeed!

The 1968 MGC Roadster presented here. VIN *GCN1U37796*. was sold new at British Motorcars in Monterey. Calif. and subsequently spent the next 40+ years being lovingly cared for by one true enthusiast. It still features its original-issue. black-and-yellow California license plates from 1968. front and back. and yes. they are included with the purchase!

Essentially. the car spent all its life with the owner. a veterinarian. and his succession of Great Danes in the fair city of Hollister. Driven sparingly. whenever the good Doctor had a day off and the California sun was shining brightly. just 48. 77 miles accrued on the C's odometer -- that's barely more than 1. 00 miles annually. just enough to keep the vital fluids circulating (the Doctor's. too).
The vintage Polariod photo to the left came with the car.

The Roadster is also accompanied by its original owner's handbook. workshop amnual. and Chilton's repair manual. as well as a display card with ribbons from a car show in Gualala. a quirky town in the California redwoods whose resident art gallery recently displayed Kent Fuller's Bonneville Streamliner!
Let's have a closer look now.

Engine compartment looks extra clean. just like you'd expect it from a low-mileage car. Originality abounds. Note the unique dual brake boosters for the power brakes (discs up front) and the factory dual carb setup. Brake system has just recently been gone through. with new boosters ($$$). front calipers. pads. lines. etc.

The main difference between the lowly "B" and the grown-up "C" is found right here: a 2. 12cc. 6-cylinder power plant. delivering plenty of go thanks to 145 healthy horses. almost twice the power you'd get from an MGB! Not unlike the Big Healey it replaced. the MGC's BMC-sourced 6 is traditional in its design; with a long stroke. it is perfectly suited for relaxed touring. This one feels very torquey. lending the car tremendous acceleration. unheard of in a "B. "

Considering the fact that is is an unrestored original. the MG's undercarriage looks gorgeous. This car has never seen a salty road or harsh winter. has never suffered from corrosion damage. The original. factory-applied paint still peeks through here and there. the pinkish spots visible in the pictures not being rust. but factory primer. Detail of front suspension below clearly shows the set of longitudinal torsion bars it received by the engineers at BMC to keep up with the added performance. A larger Salisbury rear end was also specified. Note the near-new. aluminzed exhaust system. which lends this big MG its uniquely attractive. burbling sound.

Being a lifelong California MG. the car's body has never suffered from the dreaded tin worm. There are no bubbles. holes. dents. creases. or other major boo-boos to bemoan. Sills and rocker panels are in excellent nick. Door and bonnets open and close with ease and fit very well. It's not a bondo bucket -- like so many others we've seen -- but a rust free. very tidy "survivor" that has always been garaged and pampered.

Primrose Yellow is one of our favorite 1960s-era colors. Frequently found on Jaguar's E-Type. it's quintessentially British.
The finish has lovingly mellowed. yet it's smooth and glossy. with just a few small flaws here and there - like rock chips - that have been touched up with a fine brush.

The MGC-only. 15-inch painted wire wheels with chrome knock offs are in excellent condition and shod with genuine DUNLOP radials of the dimension 165-15.

Surveying the C's cozy cockpit. we are pleased to note the factory original. banjo-type steering wheel. Dashboard is in fabulous condition as well. Unusually. there is not a single hairline crack to be found. Defying their lord of darkness reputation. all gauges and lights are in good working condition.

Comfortable bucket seats are covered in genuine -- and still very supple -- black leather hydes with off-white piping.

Tuesday. January 7. was just another beautiful winter day here in San Buenaventura: mild. yet sunny and dry. and we were happy to fire up the MGC for our indispensable test drive and photo session.

Right away. we noticed the delightful sound of the straight-6. Utterly different from the B's olde 4-banger. it reminds us of a big Healey or XK-E. From low. low engine revolutions. the "C" displays the grunt only a big six can deliver. Combined with the auto box. the best characteristics of a torque-happy six become apparent.

It's evident that this MG has been lovingly cared for by a car person who was able to maintain it in fine working condition for all these years. Its ease of operation is revelatory. Why shift gears when you can just glide along effortlessly. with power brakes and easy but precise rack and pinion steering. from one stop light to the next. accompanied by just a low rumble from the tail pipe?

Returning home. we are in love with the MGC -- soo relaxing to drive and reliable. too. never missing a beat.

Unearthing a well-preserved MGC Roadster that has traveled a mere 48. 77 miles in 46 years is reason for celebration. as California black-plate originals of this caliber hardly ever appear on the market anymore. Why wait when you could spend the coming spring and summer cruising in -- quintessentially British -- style?
May God save the Queeen!
