1972 Dodge Charger SE

During the early-1960s, automakers were exploring new ideas in the personal luxury and specialty car segments. Chrysler, fast to enter the specialty car market, selected their Dodge Division to enter the marketplace with a mid-size B-bodied sporty car to fit between the "pony car" Ford Mustang and "personal luxury" Ford Thunderbird. The intention was to create a fastback look while sharing as much existing company hardware as possible.

The consigner purchased the car 5 years ago and began to show it. In fact, since the purchase it's been shown over 75 times with 45 awards! It's only been driven to shows and has been garaged since the purchase. Prior to that the car sat in a garage for 18 years in NJ. Some new electrical parts, and a 770 Holley carb and numbers matching 400 V8 among other things have been done by our consigner to the tune of $10,000 not including the labor. Sound the trumpets...Da, Da, Da, Dit.. Ta Da! Charge!!

ExteriorTime passage has been kind to this car as it presents in straight steel, well minded gaps , and no rust condition all bathed in blazing orange. It has a beautifully preserved black vinyl top and a nice sloping rear glass and trunk deck. Up front a band of chrome surrounds the grille which presents with hidden headlights and a wide chrome vertical bar in the surrounding bumper center. Below is more orange and the turn signal lights. Topping the hood is a circular chrome ring with a red leafed wreath inside encircling an SE badge in the center. Close up on the paint in that particular photo shows the quality of the paint which is classified by this writer as beautiful. All the rest of the chrome and trimmings is excellent right down to the chromed sport mirrors. The B pillar on the black vinyl has another chromed wreath with a "fratzog" badge and SE just below. A scripts version of Special Edition is just aft of this badge, and this is on either side. Looking closely at the detail shots should assure you that this car is in excellent condition right down to the rear bumper, which is another circling version, this time with the horizontal tail lighting. 14-inch Mopar road wheels are wrapped by BFG raised white letter radial T/A's on all 4 corners. Follow me, don't follow me, I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush.

InteriorSit down inside this great looking Charger and you'll find an original white vinyl interior that is accented with tasteful walnut wood and stainless trim. Door panels show just a slight bit of smudging, nothing that a good cleaning could rectify, and a few faults at the edges of the armrest/pull. Inside the front buckets are wrapped in white vinyl, have sleek high backs with built in headrests, stitching for the inserts along with buttons in these panels. Some slight smudging and wear, but they are factory. The back seat also in white has the stitching and buttons as well. Sitting back here I have a faint memory of my grandfather's 1972 charger which he allowed me to take to the prom, and something about paradise by the dashboard lights. But I digress and carry on to the dash which is fronted by another fratzog which makes up the center of the black steering wheel. Hah! Betcha did not see that coming... A series of round gauges including a factory tachometer sit within a wood grained panel just below the padded black vinyl overhang of the dash top. In the center is a black console which has some wood inlay black edging and a pistol grip Hurst shifter, as well as a long glove box/armrest. Slightly faded but original black carpeting is flooding the floors, and up top is a black headliner.

DrivetrainLift the long, freshly finished hood right down to the rubber seals, and you'll find a fully detailed 400ci V8, that is numbers matching. On top is a dual snout air cleaner covering that wears a new coat of Hemi orange paint and near perfect decals. Handsome ribbed and badged Mopar Performance aluminum valve covers are on as well as new ignition wires and distributor, (some of the $10G the consigner spent), that work in unison with a 4-barrel 770 Holley Avenger carburetor. On back is a numbers matching A833 4-speed manual transmission worked by a new clutch and pressure plate, and way back is now an 8-3/4 inch rear axle with 3.23 gears for cruising down the highway. All nice and corrosion free under this hood. "Coming in fast, over me".

UndercarriageUnderneath shows a nice patina black with some surface rust throughout. Floor pans and rockers remain structurally sound as does the front independent torsion bar suspension and rear leaf springs. Power disc brakes are up front, and power drums for the rear.

Drive-AbilityTurn the ignition switch and the great sounding motor springs to life with a little help from a new battery and settles into a rumbling high-performance idle, hot or cold. All this Mopar goodness propels one forward in a significant manner. All good on the functionality front. It truly was an enjoyable drive and brought back some great memories of my Grandfather's 72 Charger.

Cars like this mostly original '72 Charger are what make this hobby fun. It combines a slew of trophy winning ingredients with a price that is substantially lower than most freshly completed muscle cars and enough firepower to humble even modern performance cars. Best of all, in a sea of traditional, over-exposed big block Mopars, you'll have a unique car that can be driven and enjoyed for years to come. Follow me...
