Description

1969 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

The aerodynamic lines of America's original sports car make it the one automobile nobody mistakes for anything else. In a coupe or convertible this is the genuine article, designed and engineered without compromise. Corvette stands proudly alone, because nobody but Chevrolet can turn out a car like this on a production line. And it's as honest as it is beautiful. As you've learned to expect.

On our showroom floor here at the Classic Auto Mall is this barn find 1969 Chevrolet Corvette. Beautiful lines for this year the real racing form was taking shape. A numbers matching big block car in need of some TLC, but complete and drivable in its current condition or take it to the next level and create a show winner.

Exterior
Sporting a faded, chipped and cracked respray in the original code 974 Monza Red this fiberglass dream is awaiting your artistic touch. The Stingray moniker is back but now all one word. Emulating the graceful fish of its namesake, we have a long and low hood with vented sharklike front quarters and a low stance sculpted body line. Hidden headlights push downward towards the front V shaped bumper and chrome surrounded intake vents below. On the back are dual winglike bumpers that frame dual duals for taillights. The highlight of course are the dual side pipes in chrome which have some wear and loss of shine hanging just below the doors. 15-inch deep dish rally wheels are all around and are wrapped by BF Goodrich T/A radials.

Interior
The door panels which appear to have been painted orange over the original red are complete but show soiling, loss of paint and slight pitting of the chrome accessories. The high back buckets appear sculpted from the wind with their all red vinyl coverings, and ergonomic head rests which just peer over the top of the rear deck. An orange painted center console races through these seats and rises to house the aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette Pioneer radio and a quintuplet of gauges and wiper switch on top. Looking onto the deep circular inset gauges in front of the steering wheel, these are very clean and have almost no color loss to the gauge sweeps. The like new original steering wheel fronts the dash, and below is slightly soiled plush red carpet with a rubber insert on the driver's side for further weatherproofing of the carpet.

Drivetrain
A 427ci V8 crowds the engine bay and is numbers matching in its patina glory. On top is a single 4-barrel Summit Racing carburetor and aluminum intake manifold, and there is a Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission on back which is also numbers matching. A date-correct rear axle is on the very back and weighs in with a 3.36 assumed ratio as the axle stamping code is obliterated.

Undercarriage
Underneath is looking good with surface rust and patina on the frame and suspension components, but no invasive rust is noted. A full independent rear suspension with a frame-anchored differential unit is on board. Position of each wheel established by three links: tubular axle drive shafts, transverse strut rods, torque control arms. Vertical suspension loads taken by transverse leaf springs. While the front suspension is independent coil spring in design. Power disc brakes are all around and headers feed to the chrome side pipes.

Drive-Ability
Early Stingray's are always a hoot to drive so it was coin toss time to see whom would drive and naturally I won. A twist of the key and it fired right up, and we were off to the test track. It performed beautifully with great acceleration from that 427ci V8, and better than expected handling for a barn find car. During our drive we noted that both the turn signals and reverse lights were non functional.

A nice barn find in the form of a numbers matching big block Stingray. With some minor wrench turning this could become your daily driver or you can take it to the next level and compete with the big boys at the national shows. The choice is yours, but you better not dally as big block Corvettes don't last long in our hallowed halls.
