Beginning in 1946, Mercedes-Benz adopted a single-model policy out of necessity, as the pre-war 170 V was the only model for which usable tooling had survived World War II. Thus, it was upon the backbone of this hardy and versatile chassis that Mercedes-Benz rebuilt itself and its sales. The standard model was a four-door sedan, but as the post-war years went on, numerous other versions were developed, including everything from attractive cabriolets to open-top parade vehicles and trucks.

One of the scarcest 170 variants was the 170 Da OTP, also known as the Police Special, which was a four-door open tourer with a folding windshield. This model, as its name suggests, was intended directly for police agencies and other official organizations, including the newly formed Bundegrenzschutz (German federal border patrol) as this particular car was. It was the first 170 model to have an outside trunk lid, a feature that was immediately seen as so useful that it was adopted for the civilian market as well. The majority of these cars were painted Police Green, with blue adopted on later OTPs.

This Mercedes is car #506 of the 531 Police Specials built between 1948 and 1951, and it was ordered on 08/09/1951 by the German Bundesgrenzschutz (BGS; English: Federal Border Guard) as Police Special #6362300506. It was delivered on 11/20/1951 to Group K of the Bonn-Duisdorf BGS department. Later on, the Federal Border Guard sold the car to an ambassador of Mexico. In 1989 a U.S serviceman brought the car to West Virginia and owned the Mercedes until currently. During his ownership he performed a full restoration on the vehicle and upgrades to make the convertible more drivable.

Dressed in black, the paint and trim are in excellent condition, the bodywork is straight. The engine bay is extremely tidy. The chrome bumpers glisten and have two pairs of fog lights perched atop the front one, the factory set and a pair of aftermarket lights. The car's black, folding manual top looks be in similar shape the rest of the exterior and is included with side curtain windows for all four doors. This car's doors are hinged where the traditional B-pillar would be, making the front doors open coach-style while the rear doors open in the usual manner. There's also a driver's side cowl light.

This classic Benz, which harks back to some of the classic 1930s coachwork, rolls on wide whitewall tiers, size 6.00-6 at every corner. Each one is mounted on black wheels with chrome center caps. The wheels are in very good order while the tires are in good shape. The rear-mounted spare tire is sized 6.70-15.

Under the vee'd hood the original Diesel engine was replaced by a period correct 1951 170S gas aluminum head 1.7L inline side valve four-cylinder (code M136)with a Rochester Monojet carburetor and upgraded Hooker header. The electrical system has been upgraded to a 12 volt system. It is buttoned to the original four-speed manual transmission and back by a 4.375:1 rear end.

Inside, is a gorgeous red leather interior. The front and rear bench seats are in overall great shape and they contrast nicely with the exterior. The corresponding carpet is in similar shape. A three-spoke steering wheel is in very good order, as are the red inner door liners. The dash is in satisfactory order and two aftermarket gauges mounted beneath, one for battery and the other for coolant. A floor-mounted shifter completes the interior.

Mercedes-Benz's Series 170 was always also available as a government model and a 170 OTP (Open Tourer Police) wasn't cheap at DM 10,650. That was a lot of money for a small series with only 531 vehicles which could not be sold to the general public. Only much later, when the series was retired from government service, did some of them get acquired by private customers.

Competition to this Benz in 1951 included MG's TD. If you're seeking to add a gorgeous post-war German produced Police car to your collection, you couldn't go wrong with this 1951 Mercedes-Benz Type 170 DA OTP Police Special at MotoeXotica Classic Cars.
