"The Best Big Car Of Its Time: 1970 Chevrolet Impala" – TheTruthAboutCars website, January 2010

Respected automotive journalist, Paul Niedermeyer, in the referenced article noted: "Let's start with the basic structure: 1970 was the last year of the perimeter-framed generation that started in 1965. By 1970, it benefited from what any car (usually) does after having been made for six years: build quality was the best. The Ford was a distant third, and the new fuselage Mopars felt a little short on development time, at least the first year '69 I drove. The Chevy was impeccably quiet, refined and smooth. Its engine started and ran smoother than the other two too. Chryslers, like our own '65 Coronet, were notorious stallers and ran rough in rainy weather until electronic ignition came along. The Fords didn't start as effortlessly. GM's Rochester carbs seemed to be better sorted out."

Offered here is a 1970 Chevrolet Impala Hardtop Coupe in black over black. The car is an extremely low-mileage, beautifully maintained, and lightly upgraded example. Since being delivered new at Rohm Chevrolet in Auburn, Indiana, the car has traveled just 34,014 miles in all-remarkably fewer than 670 miles-per-year on average.

The black exterior paint has been well maintained through the years and retains much of its original gloss. The inward-curved rear hardtop window is an especially pleasing aspect here. Chrome trim is complete and in near-showroom condition, with very light patina confined to the door handles. Both chrome bumpers incorporate lighting in their design-the side-marker lights and turn indicators in front, and the three separate taillights in back-and are especially well-kept (as is the front grille-and-headlight trim). Chrome "headlight eyebrows" (a period-correct appearance modification) have been added. Tasteful, original factory badging-including the script "Chevrolet" grille emblem with blue bowtie logo, "350" engine-designation emblems on the front fenders, script "Impala" emblems on the sail panel, and script "Chevrolet" trunk emblem-is all properly in place. Full-length body-side trim is undamaged. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Cabin glass and lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. American Racing® 15-inch, 5-spoke, chrome mag-style wheels are mounted with period-correct 265/70 red-stripe tires.

Inside, the black color theme continues. Vertically pleated black vinyl upholstery covers the front split-bench and rear bench seat. The upholstery condition overall is excellent with a minor tear on the driver's outside seat bolster. Black carpeting in excellent condition covers the cabin floors with rubber protective mats at each seating location. Door trim uses the same black vinyl, but with a square-pattern insert and a single handsome woodgrain accent highlighting a chrome leaping-impala emblem. The same emblem adorns the woodgrain on the black steering wheel. Across the expansive dashboard, the condition of trim, control surfaces, and woodgrain is excellent. The shift-lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the console, while the factory push-button AM radio remains mounted on the lower dash below an analog clock.

The car's trunk is clean, tidy, and complete.

Under the hood, the 350-cubic-inch Chevrolet V8 in its correct orange block paint commands a properly organized engine bay. Surfaces are spotless and no "chrome bits" have been added. The black air cleaner with "350" decal is a period-perfect manufacturing statement. All components are properly in place; all hoses and wiring are correctly routed. Viewed from below, surfaces are very clean and completely undamaged.

The Impala's original, factory-mounted build and identification tags remain mounted. The sale includes the car's Protect-O-Plate and the original owner's title.

While the more than 145 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '70 Impala in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

Writer Niedermeyer's final opinion on the '70 Impala? "... if I could have a time warp shopping spree of any big sedan from that era, it would be a black '70 Impala.... Sorry, Mopar fans, but those wide hips don't quite cut it compared to a mean, lean, clean-steering Chevy." No doubt, there are more than a few bowtie enthusiasts who will agree... especially when they see this pristine, low-mileage Impala.

About Garage Kept Motors

Garage Kept Motors, LLC specializes in classic and specialty online auto sales.

For our consignors, we are the only auto brokers that offer a Transparent Sale Disclosure. This means, when a car sells, we provide an exact copy of the Bill of Sale. We do this so our clients know exactly who bought their car, where it went, and most importantly how much we sold it for. No funny business.

For our buyers, our vehicles are listed on the Internet, with over 100 photos, including undercarriage pictures, and walk-around videos of the vehicles running plus a narrative-style write-up of the cars history and features. Our international exposure allows us to sell cars across the globe, and we sell a majority of them out of state and overseas. We deliver honesty and consistency in our photos and descriptions, a “no surprise” approach, so buyers, both near and far, can invest with confidence sight unseen. We are not a gallery. Vehicles can be seen locally by appointment as potential buyers are given our undivided attention.
