Overview -

This 1965 Series 1 E-Type OTS (Open Two-seater) came from the factory with covered headlamps, triple SU carburetors, toggle switches, the larger displacement 265 horsepower DOHC Jaguar 6-cylinder engine, the close-ratio full-synchro gearbox, improved braking system, improved cooling system, and more comfortable seats.

This is a full “numbers matching” E-Type - the engine, gearbox, body shell, and chassis are all original and we have confirmed that with an official Jaguar Heritage certificate.  The original factory colors are Dark Blue exterior with a Light Blue interior and a blue soft top.  Built in October of 1964, this is one of the very first 4.2-liter E-Types produced, and therefore has many minor “crossover” 3.8 features that make it a bit more interesting than the average car…  It was originally exported to Canada, with amber turn lenses and (rare for 1965) silver painted wire wheels.

We recently rescued this car in Canada, not far from where it was originally sold by Jaguar of Eastern Canada in Montreal.  It was last registered in 1972, when it had been driven only 41,516 miles…  Once we got the car back to the shop, we cleaned it up and put a coat of primer on the body for protection, and added back a few missing components from our stock of original parts.

This is a project for total restoration - it will need everything, but it also has everything - all of the important components are intact, and the car is mostly complete.  The few bits that are missing here and there are all ancillary items that are readily available, or are common replacement components (wiring harnesses, exhaust system, hoses and belts, etc.

We will provide a clear US title and a signed bill of sale.  For privacy, I have hidden the last 2 digits of the chassis number - this car is not yet logged into the E-Type registry, and I believe that it should be the new owner's choice as to whether or when to do so...

Drivetrain & Running Gear -

The engine is the original numbers matching engine and has 41,516 miles on it.  The block and head match, and all components appear to be the original pieces that have never been disassembled.  All engine accessories like the oil pan, cam covers, water pump, oil filter housing, alternator, pulleys and adjuster, etc. are correct 4.2-liter Series 1 E-Type components that are in restorable condition, and all appear to be the original pieces from this car.

The gearbox is the original matching numbers gearbox - it is a Series 1 4.2-liter “EJ” unit.  As a full-synchro, close-ratio gearbox, it is the most desirable and most valuable Jaguar gearbox.  Carburetors and intake are also the original Series 1 4.2-liter E-Type units.  All drivetrain components, front and rear suspension, braking, and steering components also appear to be original to this E-Type.

Almost all of the ancillary components are also intact - complete heater, original air cleaner assembly, wiper motor and rack, radiator and header tank.  This car does not appear to have ever been disassembled in the past, and so ALL of the original smaller pieces, brackets, linkages, and nuts, bolts and washers, etc. are intact - this is CRUCIAL for a proper restoration.

Glass and Brightwork -

The windshield is an original clear Triplex E-Type windshield that is in excellent condition for a used windshield.  The original clear Triplex side glass is intact in the LH door - the RH is missing, but the side glass is easily sourced inexpensively at a local glass shop, where they will cut it for you from flat safety glass using the existing LH window as a template.

All of the major chrome pieces are intact - and are good, restorable original E-Type pieces.  This includes the front and rear bumper blades and over-riders, windshield top, bottom and side chrome, door top chrome, turn lamps, interior and exterior door handles and latches, etc.  The top restorers will go through the time and expense of rechroming the original pieces as it results in higher quality chrome and a MUCH better fit, and most (if not all…) of the chrome included here could be restored and rechromed if you choose.

Interior -

All gauges and switches are intact and original to this E-Type.  It has all of its original dash panels and dash top (which isn't even cracked…), original steering wheel (which does need new wood), and the original radio console and ashtray assembly.

The seats that are included are not original to this car - they are very similar 1968 seats.  These seats have the same overall size and shape as the original seats, and the internal steel frames are the same as well.  The only difference is in the folding mechanism - Series 1 cars have a chrome side piece that only allows the seat to be folded forward.  The 1968 seats included have a more modern style mechanism that ratchets and allows the seats to be folded forward AND reclined - making them the most sought after replacement seats.

The interior of this car was originally light blue according to the Heritage certificate, and the interior windshield posts do still carry the original light blue vinyl.  Nearly all of the original interior was removed in the past and discarded.  However, ALL missing interior pieces are standard replacement pieces that come in a complete interior kit from any one of the major suppliers.  So what interior pieces you do not see are items that are ALWAYS discarded as part of the restoration anyway…. The pieces that you DO need - center console, windshield post trim, and door top panels are all included for recovering.

Body Shell and Bonnet -

This E-Type needs total body shell and bonnet restoration, and like nearly all E-Type projects, has rust.  This is a car from Canada, and while it appears to have only been on the road for a few years - clocking only 41,516 original miles - the Canadian Winters took their toll and the rust on this E-Type's body shell is substantial.  It will require extensive restoration and panel replacement - including but not limited to: full floors, inner and outer sills, all closing panels and gussets, tunnel panels, rear wings, boot floor, inner rear wheel arch panels, and more….  BUT - we will be there to help and hold your hand EVERY step of the way!

The bonnet, on the other hand, is an original factory Series 1 bonnet that does NOT have significant rust, but has had some hammer and dolly work in the past.  The overall shape is very good.  Some additional dolly and slapper work, replacement of the bonnet support member, repairs to the lower valance, etc. will result in a very nice original bonnet.

Included with the sale of this car is a 20% discount on any and all panels purchased from Monocoque Metalworks for the restoration of the body shell and bonnet.  Many panels will be required, and we can put together an order that is packed into and shipped with the car if desired - this saves on shipping costs and can also eliminate customs, taxes, etc. on the parts in many cases.

PLUS - free technical support from Monocoque Metalworks is included for the duration of the restoration.  And believe me - this is the most valuable aspect of the entire offering!  Customers who purchase E-Type projects from us have my personal phone number, and I answer their calls on nights and weekends while they are working on the car - I truly enjoy being a part of the restoration and will help as much as I can.  With Monocoque Metalworks, you will have an enthusiastic partner in your restoration!  We know how it's done, and how it should NOT be done.  We have all of the answers to any question you might have along the way - and if we don't, we know who does!  We know what pieces to get from which suppliers, who has the best price, and who to ask for when you call!

Location & Shipping -

This E-Type is owned by Monocoque Metalworks and is located at our shop in the state of Maryland, USA.  We have worked with Schumacher Logistics and CFR Rinkens in the past (as well as several others…) to ship cars with good results, and I am sure that they can work this out for you.  We have sold many E-Types over the years to new homes WORLDWIDE - including but not limited to: UK, Europe, Australia & New Zealand, and are familiar with the process of overseas shipping.  We can help you find a shipper - and safe transport to the docks in Elizabeth, NJ is available in an insured, enclosed trailer by me personally for an additional fee.

Conclusion -

A Series 1 4.2-liter roadster is THE E-Type to have - for desirability based on the classic Series 1 looks - for drivability based on it's larger engine and improved braking, cooling, gearing, and seating - and for value based on future appreciation - a 1965 Roadster is an INVESTMENT GRADE E-TYPE!

I was fortunate enough to drive a Series 1 roadster just like this all through my youth - and the joy of the wind-in-the-hair experience, the soft glow of the covered headlamps in the evening, the view over the bulging bonnet, and the adrenaline rush of the massive Jaguar engine are all even BETTER than you have imagined!

This one has been off the road for 50 years, waiting for you - at first in the shop, as you bring her back to life - and then on the road, where I guarantee the driving experience will give you the thrill of your life!  It's time to treat yourself!

Overall, this is a restorable project and a E-Type with some interesting features and provenance that make it a project worth your while.  The restoration process is very fulfilling, and once you are behind the wheel, the adventures you can have in this car are really just limitless!

So stop dreaming and get to work - grab this one, start the restoration process, and start LIVING your E-Type dream!  But if you are interested, DON'T WAIT - as I've said many times, they go FAST!
