1954 French Ford Comète custom body by Facel

Before we start describing the car before you we would like to bring to your attention that before WWII some of the greatest classic car designs came out of France.   The French were known for their opulence in design and yet having that opulence in good taste.   After WWII the French still had the style and class in their design elements that made the Facel Vega and the French Comète eye capturing designs.

Many people know about the fantastic design of the Facel Vega and the astronomical prices that they are currently bringing.   Few people know that Ford of France used the Facel body company to build the bodies for their Ford Comète.   This car used a flathead V-8 Ford engine design in 1954 and the eye appeal for a Ford Comète is certainly competitive with any of the top designs of Ferrari in 1954.   (Note the design for this Ford Comète was originally from Farina of Italy).

The design of this car is absolutely exceptional and when you see the photo of the restored 1954 Ford Comète as per the attached you will see how beautiful this car can look when restored (cream color restored car IS NOT CAR FOR SALE in this ad).  

This is going to be a rare opportunity for somebody to purchase an unrestored car. restore it and have what is a custom bodied car by Facel in their collection.  

The owner is not looking for any large sums of money but he would like to see the car get into the hands of somebody that will restore it and as he said he hopes that he is around long enough to see the car in its restored condition and maybe even have a ride in it.   After all he kept it all these years with the hopes that he would do that himself and now that he realizes he no longer is capable of that he would still like to see the car in its finished form.  

The car that is for sale in this ad is a garage find.   The owner is starting to knock on the door of 80 years old and is in very poor health.   He has kept this car in a garage since he purchased it some 25-30 years ago.   The car is a good. solid car. currently not running and only missing the major parts of the front and rear bumpers.   The current owner bought the car without a title on a bill of sale and he will sell the car on a bill of sale.  

Here at MissChiTown we are very familiar with the Facel Vegas and they have always been of strong interest but lately the edgy French cars such as the French Ford Comète or even the American Munch Jet or Kaiser Darrins are the cars that are tending to be the stellar stars in terms of desirability and price increases.   Again this is going to be a wonderful opportunity for somebody to buy into a car that will have more then plenty of room to cover the cost of restoration in terms of its final value.  

The car has been sitting in the same spot in the owners garage for well over a quarter of a century.   When he bought the car he was not familiar with the specifications of the car but fell in love with its attractive design so he is not capable of giving you all sorts of detailed information about the car.    Mileage is unknown.  

The reserve is set accordingly and we think this is a fantastic opportunity for somebody that appreciates the rarity of a post war French Ford with a Facel custom body.

The information that we were able to gather from the Internet was that the Comète combined the elegant style of a body by Facel with the dependable mechanical underpinnings of a Ford.   The price for a new Comète in 1954 was considered extremely high and therefore not many cars were produced.  

It is interesting to note that in 1949 Henry Ford II admired Italian designing and commissioned Farina. an Italian body builder to build a sports luxury coupe on a Mercury chassis.   The Farina Mercury became the prototype for the French Comète built by Ford in France and bodied by Facel.  

It is believed that only 699 Comètes were built and at the time they were the most expensive Ford product in the world.   It was the only Ford automobile with a custom coach.    It is believed that the information that was obtained from the Internet that the Ford engine was a 3. 9 litre engine and delivered a 105 horse power with plenty of torque.   The problems with the sale of this car in France when new was that the engine was extremely large and therefore received a very large tax from the French government.   The car was known for a top speed of just under 100 mph.  

Please examine all of the pictures and watch the video to see the multitude of pictures of this car so that you have a complete idea of how complete the car is and make your decision from the photos.   Obviously there are other small things besides the bumpers that are missing such as possibly the radio and other little items.   The car obviously will need a complete restoration but we feel that it will be worth every dollar and drop of sweat in the end to have such a rare custom bodied. French Ford that is just about never seen at any car shows in the United States.

Keep in mind that while we have been instructed by the owner not to reveal the reserve on this car. the owner has indicated that if somebody wants to make an offer we can bring it to the owner and if it is agreeable he will accept it and end the auction.   We consider this one of the rarest opportunities that are currently being offered for such an exclusive custom bodied car.   Bid with confidence to get your “Dream Car”!

UPDATE – GOOD NEWS!

We have been informed by what we believe to believe an expert on Comète French Fords.   He has indicated that the French Ford that we have is a 1955 model that is not only a Comète but also it is a Monte Carlo.  The Monte Carlo was the upgrade on the Comète that gave it the scoop on the hood and minor differences in the grille and a whole lot more horsepower.   The horsepower apparently came through a hotter cam. better carburetion and higher compression.   We were further told that by the end of 1954 SIMCA purchased the Ford factory in France and continued making the Comète Monte Carlo for just one year in 1955.   That explained the SIMCA label on the firewall.   The Monte Carlo a little rarer being that there are very few that have the SIMCA tag.  

The information that we received we believe to be correct but we have no way of verifying it.   Your bid should be commensurate with the pictures you see and not solely or by the comments of viewers of the ad.   We have done our best to bring the information to the bidders but the French Fords are so rare that they're no real book or bible for explanation of the variations.   That being said it does appear that this information is correct and sounds like a definite upgrade to the original content.  Call 847-774-4857
