In 1962 the Beach Boys paid tribute to a legendary Chevrolet power plant when they released the song "409". During the song they state how when they take her to the track she really shines and she always turns in the fastest times. This 1964 Impala SS could have easily been the car the Beach Boys were referencing. Completely restored. equipped with a 400hp 409ci V8. and a luxurious red interior. it's ready to start winning awards.

In 1964. Chevrolet's largest engine choice was their famous 409ci V8. The 409 was found exclusively in the Impala model like the one we have sitting in front of us today. This gorgeous 1964 Impala SS convertible received a complete nut and bolt restoration and stands today as a pristine example of how incredible an Impala SS can be. Before we get too far into the description of the 409. let's decode the VIN.

Prior to 1964 the Super Sport Impala was available just as an option package. however in 1964 Chevrolet created the Super Sport a series in itself in both a hardtop and convertible coupe versions. The SS option could be ordered with any engine option even with Chevy's V-6 option. although few were ordered with anything besides the two top of the line 409's. Covered in a gorgeous shade of black. the Impala is accented quite nicely by the striking red interior. The Impala's body is absolutely flawless. At the front. a massive grille houses four large headlights above a body width chrome front bumper. Above the grille is the long black hood that is separated by a chrome accent piece that gives the front end an incredible look. Down the sides of the body. the body lines and seam are perfect. The black vinyl convertible top is fitted with an interior-matching red boot. and all the correct 409 and Chevy badging is present. As you make your way to the back of the car you'll see the dual bowtie-logo outside mirrors and the SS Impala badging at the back of the quarter-panels and on the trunk. At the back of the car the rear Chevrolet emblem is found on a white accent piece that runs the length of the rear bumper. Just below the Chevrolet badging is the six rear taillights and chrome rear bumper.

In 1964. not all Chevy 409's were created equal. Buyers had their choice of three 409 options. a 340-hp version with hydraulic valve lifters. a solid lifter 400-hp version with a single 4-barrel carburetor and a top of the line 425hp dual quad unit equipped also with solid lifters. Pop the long black hood on this SS and you'll reveal the original. intermediate 409 choice that was rated to pump out 400hp. The engine compartment immediately shines thanks in part to chrome valve covers and air cleaner. On both sides of the 4-barrell carburetor and intake are the cylinder heads that are painted in the correct red. The detailing that was involved in the restoration is excellent. and it shows within the engine bay.

Put the SS on a lift and you'll see how the frame is painted in matte black while the floor pan is painted in a red oxide. Bolted to the 409ci V8 is the aforementioned 4-speed manual transmission. Spent gasses travel down the stock headers and exit out dual exhausts to create a nice rumble. Power drum brakes can be found at all four corners and are responsible for slowing the massive ride. In front of those brakes. BF Goodrich Silvertown narrow whitewalls surround the distinctive SS wheel covers.

Open the doors and you'll reveal a striking red interior that impresses just as much as the rest of the vehicle. The red is extremely vibrant and the interior was equipped with plenty of upgrades from the regular Impala standard equipment. The Super Sport brought front bucket seats with locking console. leather-grained vinyl. swirl-pattern instrument panel inserts and moldings. built-in rear speaker. dual dome and courtesy lights. door safety reflectors. special body side moldings and SS emblems both inside and out. In front of the driver's seat is the massive steering wheel that has the famous Impala logo in the center of the wheel. Also located on the steering column is the RPM gauge. Between the driver and passenger seats. is the push button radio and the shifter for the 4-speed transmission. Behind the driver is a bench seat capable of housing a few of your closest friends on your way to your local car show. Thanks in part to power steering and power brakes. the Impala is a dream to drive and the interior is a great place to log miles from.
