Up for sale is my 1979 International Harvester Scout 2.   It has the rare 196 ci 4 cylinder engine and a 4 speed manual transmission.   It is 4 wheel drive.  It has power steering.  It runs and drives great and the 4 wheel drive functions as it should.   It was my daily driven vehicle for a couple of years but I recently stopped driving it so much when I bought a new vehicle.    This scout is a great driver quality scout.   It will not ever be a show scout but makes a great "10 footer".   It is in good overall condition and is better than most you will find.   It isn't perfect. but that wasn't the intention when we re-did it.   We wanted a great running and driving vehicle that we could drive to the hunting club or to the mall.   We wanted one that we wouldn't be embarrassed to drive and one that would take us where ever we needed to go. We wanted to build one that would be tough as nails and have a scout that we wouldn't have to worry about scratching up a $3. 00 paint job by driving in through the trails in the woods.   This is exactly what it is and it has been GREAT! 

 

The engine starts right up and runs smooth with no issues.   It has recently received a full tune up. There is a new throttle cable installed.   There is a newer heater core installed and new radiator hoses.  The transmissions shifts smooth with no grinds or unusual issues of any kind.    4x4 engages as it should and the hubs lock in fine.   

 

The interior has bucket seats up front and a fold and tumble seat in the rear. Drivers seat apparently had some small tears as the previous owner had put some type of black heavy duty cloth type tape on it and it has worked great for years with no issues.   Passenger seat is in excellent condition and rear seat is in great shape for its age.   It does have some small tears as seen in the pics but overall great condition.   The interior has been bedlined.   The dash is also black and is in great condition with no cracks or chips in it.  The scout has the vent windows on the front doors. nbsp;adjustable vents in the kick panels. and the sliding rear windows on the sides of the top.  The original gauges all work as they should and all lights work as they should also.   The original front floor pans must have had some rust on them at some point as the previous owner had new patch panels already installed before I bought it.   When we bought the scout the rear floor pan had some rust in it. so the rusty areas were cut out. the remainder was treated with a rust neutralizer. then repaired with 3 layers of fiberglass mat and 1 layer of woven fiberglass. The floor is very solid and I have jumped up and down on it to make sure :)  Also the rear fenders had some small areas where it rusted through (I have before pictures if you would like to see) and that was all cut out and repaired as well with fiberglass mat and bondo-glas (NOT standard bondo that is prone to cracking and chipping).    The exterior was painted with a new raptorliner that is a custom yellow color.   The roof has also been sprayed with a raptor liner in black bedliner as well.   This paint is very durable and tough and will hold up for YEARS! It will also resist scratching. dents. dings. and rust!!!  

IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE COLOR it can be re-sprayed with the same Raptor liner in any color you choose for around $250.   ALSO if you prefer a regular paint job. the Raptor Liner can be removed with a wire wheel or sanding and then the scout could be re-sprayed with a base/clear or single stage paint job.   I simply choose this material since it would be durable and last for years !

 

The scout has brand new BFG 31x10. 50x15 All Terrain tires on it.   Newer wagon wheel style rims. upgraded heavy duty shackles all around with urethane bushings. (It has about 2" of lift).   It has a heavy duty front bumper with 2 light tabs.   The rear bumper has been painted with black bedliner as well. The scout has a new POLY 19 gallon fuel tank with new sending unit (never worry about rust or build up in this tank!!!) .  The scout has a  OEM roof rack installed on it.   It also has lots of upgrades to the steering and driveability.   It has 2 degree caster correction kit installed. an alignment was just done. nbsp;GENUINE original STRAIGHT-Steer installed. steering stabilizer installed. FULL Borgeson steering shaft and joints installed. It also has new shocks all around.

 

It runs and drives great and is super dependable.   It actually gets good fuel mileage for being a 4x4 straight axle suv.   It is a ton of fun to drive and with all the upgrades done to it. it is VERY low maintenance.   This scout makes a great/fun 4x4 for trips to the beach. trails. or just out on the town.   

 

Stand out from all the jeeps on the road. Get a real 4x4. Drive a SCOUT!

 

The only known issues with the scout are: Catalytic converter works great BUT the previous owner had it replaced around 2005 and it is ran next to the frame rail/body mount and it tends to rattle when you let off the gas a little.   It still is working fine and actually passed the emissions test in NC when we bought it. and the noise does not effect the driveability of the scout what-so-ever.   It is just something I am used to and is really not even a big deal. but I figured I would mention it.   I received a quote to have it removed and a straight pipe installed for $35 or have it replaced with a high-flow model with new pipe installed and moved back away from the mounts for $150.

Also the lower output seal on the power steering gear box has a small leak.   It leaks about 1/2 pint per month or two of driving it a few times per week. I actually ordered a part to replace it ($7) but they sent me the wrong part (sent me the upper maybe?)  Its a super easy to replace part and takes about 15 minutes to install the new one for even the most novice mechanic :)  I will see about getting a new one and putting it in.   It is basically the same type seal as a pinion seal for all of you mechanics out there.   You simply unbolt pitman arm. remove the pitman arm from the gear box. remove seal. install new seal. reinstall pitman arm. fill with new power steering fluid. and check for leaks.

 

Also the driver's side door panel has been missing since we got it. (seen in the pics)  They are basically flimsy cardboard pieces anyway and it never bother me by not being there.   I am assuming that it was removed by the previous owner since the drivers side window crank does not feel like it is connected to anything.   You can roll window up and down by pulling or pushing the window up or down so that's how I have done it for the past few years :)  It hasn't bothered me at all and I haven't even looked into it.   I am sure that something has just come off of the window crank and needs to be bolted or clipped back on. but I haven't messed with it.   The window still goes down easily and up easily you just use your hand rather than the crank.   Also the window stays where you put it so it hasn't been a bother to me.

Also the rear driver side lower panel under the taillight had a small dent that we pulled and straightened back out (from a small fender bender the previous owner has been involved in back around 1998 from what we were told).   It wasn't hardly any damage at all as you can see.   The bumper was slightly pushed in so they replaced the bumper supports (impact bars) and even reused the original bumper. There was no frame damage or serious damage at all.   it was just cosmetic only.   We had planned on having the area repaired. but were unable to get it fixed before the scout was scheduled to be painted.   It would be very easy to sand. repair. and re-spray and we actually have a little extra paint in case we ever decided to repair it.   I will throw that in along with it also.   I added a close up pic of it so you can see exactly how it is currently.   It was drilled. pulled. and straightened back out as best as it could.   They then were going to apply a layer of Bondo-Glas or Tiger Hair-( fiberglass strand body filler)  and smooth it back out.
