While a lot of collectors are busy chasing 'Cudas and Road Runners. they're quick to overlook the Plymouth GTX. Available with the same ground-pounding big blocks as its brothers. the GTX was a refined alternative for the guy who wanted serious performance wrapped in line-topping class. This awesome GTX. still equipped with its original 440 and heavy duty automatic. is the kind of classic that'll show. and go. just as well as its trophy winning brethren. The only difference is: it doesn't require multiple bank signatures to finance. This slick Plymouth's high quality. professional restoration began with what appears to be a solid. rust-free body. That body was painstakingly stripped. sanded and massaged to better-than-new condition. Once those massaged panels were correctly aligned. a smooth coat of Chrysler code EB3 Light Blue Metallic was laid under correct transverse stripes. And the result is an ultra-straight. fully detailed pavement pounder that. thanks to its refreshing pigment. literally glows under our bright showroom lighting.

Every bit of this Mopar's bright ornamentation is extremely clean. lending excellent detail to the aforementioned two-stage. And while it's really hard to determine whether all those baubles and bolt-ons are original. they certainly look nice! At the front of the car. a black honeycomb grille hangs a bold "GTX" script between four halogen headlights. a good looking chrome bumper and crystal clear parking lamps. Behind that grille. a correct Fresh Air hood centers an otherwise wind-cheating scoop between a small "PLYMOUTH" emblem. traditional hood pins and "440" branded signal indicators. Above that hood. like-new glass rides between a correct vinyl roof. well-maintained trim and satin-finished windshield wipers. Below that glass. slab-sided body panels hang stylish side scoops and aggressive "GTX" emblems between dent-free wheel lips. bright chrome mirrors and old school Chrysler door handles. And at the back of the car. a striking black valence centers crystal clear tail lamps between a fourth "GTX" emblem. a wide-set "PLYMOUTH" script. a second chrome bumper and spotless stainless exhaust tips.

Pull the car's pins and you'll find an original. 440 cubic inch RB V8 that hangs a correct 2536430 casting number between a 1969 casting date. correct "F" assembly stamp and matching 101993 partial VIN. More popular than Chrysler's famed Hemi. and almost as feared as Plymouth's 440 6 BBL. this Super Commando V8 was designed to offer an exceptional combination of speed and civility. Oxygen whips through the functional Fresh Air Hood to a correctly decaled air cleaner that rides on a big 4-barrel carburetor. At the front of that carburetor. a traditional points distributor sequences fire into a fresh set of plug wires. At the sides of that intake. Hemi Orange valve covers perfectly contrast professionally restored exhaust manifolds. Cooling is supplied by a heavy duty Chrysler radiator that's cinched to Chrysler hoses via simple squeeze clamps. And power is provided by a reproduction Mopar red cap battery. Aesthetically. the car's bay looks spectacular. all the way from its stainless fuel lines to its Pentastar washer reservoir and metallic inner fenders. And functionally. one quick turn of the ignition results in a rumbling. high performance idle: hot or cold.

This Plymouth's chassis specs leave little question as to why Chrysler's B-body architecture was such a huge hit with performance car fans. Take a step under our lift and you'll find a tough ol' stoplight skeleton that's been maintained to the same high standards as the car's bright engine bay and shiny exterior panels. Behind the Super Commando. an original A727 Torqueflite 3-speed. which is authenticated by a matching 101993 partial VIN. twists a familiar Chrysler rear end around fully streetable gears. Below that proven drivetrain. a heavy duty Hemi suspension has been methodically rebuilt to include factory power steering. a correct sway bar and sturdy drum brakes. Above that proven drivetrain. solid floors are layered in weather-resistant undercoating and dressed in items like a modern fuel tank and leak-free fluid lines. Exhaust is handled by free-flowing. 2. 5-inch pipes which jettison cooked dinosaurs via traditional turbo mufflers and spotless stainless tips. And power flows to the pavement through familiar Rallye wheels. which spin meaty 225/70R14 front and 245/60R14 rear Goodyear Eagle STs around chrome lug nuts. silver centerpieces. and satin trim rings.

Counter to today's obsession with technology and convenience. it seems old school American muscle cars only needed black vinyl. a bit of wood trim and essential instrumentation to strike a perfect balance of 'instantly classic' and 'perpetually cool'. And when you open this coupe's solid doors. you'll find a cockpit where legendary Mopar power melds seamlessly with a stylish. no-nonsense driving environment. At the center of the floors. firm front bucket and rear bench seats have been stuffed with fresh padding and topped with correct white-piped and Plymouth-embossed covers. At the sides of those seats. weather-free door panels hang chrome-seated armrests below bright wood trim and correctly painted frames. At the bottom of those panels. good looking carpet is protected by color-keyed floor mats. On top of that carpet. a wood-trimmed console anchors a curved shifter between bright courtesy lamps. And opposite that console. a tight blue headliner is stretched around straight roof bows and a fully functional dome light. The car's classy dash hangs fully functional gauges behind correct wood trim. a familiar Chrysler Solid State and a red Air Grabber switch. In front of the driver. a monochromatic steering wheel spins a silver horn ring around a cool Mayflower centerpiece. And behind the passengers. the car's fully restored trunk is authentic all the way down to its full-size spare. refurbished jack and centered decklid decal.

The sale of this super cool Plymouth includes the aforementioned broadcast sheets. an original owner's manual. original warranty paperwork and a few historical items.

With the market focused on specialty Road Runners and big money 'Cudas. it's easy to overlook cars like this striking GTX. Not only is it a correct. numbers-matching restoration with a price that's substantially lower than most finicky garage fodder. it's also an underappreciated rarity that mixes top notch Plymouth performance with increased approachability. If you're ready to relive the golden age of Detroit in a muscle car you can actually enjoy. don't miss the chance to bring home this awesome metallic Mopar!
