Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.25) based on 99 votes

Peugeot 205 GTI, 1.9 registration mark F370JDS was registered new on the 9th of March 1989 the original bill of sale dated 10th March 1989 shows that Mr Andrew McLean was the lucky chap who bought this vehicle from Aitken – Walker cars, Duns Service Station, Duns, Berwickshire.

This invoice shows that the basic price was £8640.54 discounted by 8% left the cost at £7949.54 however once car tax was added (£720.06) No Plates (£15.00) Delivery Charges (£180) metallic paint (£144) and VAT (£1351.29) and road fund (£100) a grand total of £10459.89 was due. Luckily for Mr McLean, he had a part exchange in the form of a 1987 (D) Peugeot 205 GTI at £5989.89 all that was required was a balance of £4470.00.

Invoices show that Mr Mclean had the car until at least July 13th 1992 where it had a variety of service items such as oil filter, fuel filter 4 x plugs and a bulb.

Invoices then show that Mr R Sanderson then owned the car at 8th of December 1992 and it appears to have stayed with him until at least 6th of May 1995.

F370JDS was then purchased by Mr Dave Jackson on the 30th of may 1996 from BB Services, Seascale, Cumbria (rear plate shows this garage) for the sum of £3300 at this point the vehicles mileage was quoted as being 98305.

The vehicle then had a new air flow meter fitted by a Mr S Jackson (unknown if same person however both garages are in Cumbria). This is dated 7th of January 1998.

The Peugeot 205 was then bought by Mr Neil Pinkerton from STC Garage in Cumbria on the 2nd of August 2002 for the meagre price of £900. On the 8th of April 2006 while within the care of Mr Pinkerton the car had a substantial amount of work carried out including a timing belt and water pump and various other jobs amounting to £549.81. The last invoice I have showing this keeper is from 15th of June 2006.

Invoices from 5th of June 2006 show a different name however with the same address as Neil Pinkerton, invoices suggest that Miss V Corlett was responsible for the ownership of the car until 2009 where the invoices stop.

In approximately October 2012 my father and I purchased this vehicle from what I remember to be a relocating Royal Marine (I think) the vehicle had no MOT however we were assured that it would fly through, a pre booked test got the car home and since then it has been in my ownership, initially in my mothers name for insurance purposes and then being registered to myself in August 2015.

About the car.

136605 miles

MOT – 30/09/2022

The car is a very standard and original car, 1.9 car with no modifications. The car is the coveted Non Cat, Non Power Steering and Non Sunroof car. Matching tyres all with very good tread and in good condition wheels. The paintwork is original, please consider the age of this vehicle and the type of car when being critical. The car possesses all its body kit, red stripes and badging. The rear quarter badge on the offside has cracked however still in place and present the cars originality very well.

The bonnet has an outwards Ding consistent with someone leaving a tool under the bonnet on closing and while in the area of the bonnet some corrosion has effected the inner skin near to one of the hinges.

At some point in the cars history someone has attempted to colour the body kit black in place of the original grey however I have managed to remove the majority of this, again please consider the type of car this was and unfortunately how some of these cars ended up.

On this topic, the offside rear quarter panel at the opening of the rear window appears to have been damaged at some point with evidence of a repair. To me, this is consistent with and likely to be an attempt to gain access to the vehicle in the 90's when this type of vehicle was a favourite of the undesirables, the repair is good and once again shows this vehicles history and originality.

In true classic 205 form, the lower panels in front of the offside rear wheel is showing some corrosion at the lower seems, (see pictures) this Is unsightly at worst however I believe this to be purely cosmetic at this stage. I had planned to have this sorted and the panels below the trim line painted however when I began to think about selling the car I felt originality was key.

The roof has one little dent in the centre below the ariel.

The vehicles glass is all intact and appears to be period correct, the electric windows are slow however do actuate up and down. Central locking also working correctly from the drivers door.

In my ownership the car has been used, (2nd prize in class from the Tayside Classic Car show one year, much to my surprise) used lightly, If you check the MOT history it shows that in my ownership (October 2012) the car has done just over 4200 miles, never really going far and for the occasional blast in the country. During this time I have fitted a new alternator, Bosch starter motor and battery and during lockdown 2021 I changed the cambelt tensioner and water pump, this in addition to the usual oil changes and minor mechanical remedies such as an oil hose and brake pads and disks.

Engine bay retains all original stickers and markings on the slam panel

The interior is all original, original fit seats and carpets, the steering wheel is original along with the gear knob. Mats are reproduction however look very smart and are embroidered with GTI. The dashboard is original grey coloured as is the steering wheel. Although the car no longer has an alarm there is a blinking light on the dash to the right of the steering wheel along with a hole that was drilled into the dash in the same area. This has been plugged with a rubber bung and is very neat.

Original factory fit radio and tape player still fitted, along with a collection of authentic 80s music on tape!

As I said the seats are original with some age marks on the centre fabric and the leather bolsters are some what hard however all intact, the central portion of the driver seat has come away from the stitching at the bolster however not unsightly, I can provide a photo of this if required.

Underside is very original, no issues identified and very original. The back box was replaced last year and due to not being able to obtain a middle section with the correct type of joint for this car, a repair was put together using exhaust clamps, not the most visually appealing however does the job.

The wheels are all standard 1.9 model with 4 x matching Toyo tyres + spare alloy and tyre in the usual place.

For the duration of my ownership the car has always been kept garaged and only ever seen rain due to unfortunate timing.

The car always starts on the button and runs very nice, it is responsive and rewarding even in todays traffic and still holds its own on faster roads.

I never thought I would sell this car however as the world changes and before we all have to drive glorified milk floats there is other cars I would like to have a go with, the market for these GTIs is a difficult one to gauge, from scrappers or project cars right up to fully restored examples this car is an honest and very original example of a sought after specification and with a great documented history.

2 x keys.

Oil filter and oil changed 19.10.2021
