Owned by Baron Rene de Kerchove whose wife. Maisie Seville Shainwald was the widow of Michael Dreicer (died 1921). one of America's foremost jewellers during the early 20th Century. After Dreicer's death his entire stock of jewels & precious stones was bought by Cartier for $2. 5million! In 1923 Maisie married Jardine Bell Whyte. a British engineer & Naval architect who later served in Parliament as Conservative MP for N. E. Derbyshire in 1931. By 1935 Maisie & Jardine had divorced and in February 1935 she married her 3rd & final husband. Baron Rene de Kerchove. GHL34 was shipped out to New York on the SS Argos Hill. which had been built in 1922 in Nova Scotia & previously named the SS Canadian Constructor. The Baron & Baroness divided their time between the Ritz Hotel in New York. their homes in Monaco & at Cumberland Terrace. London. Rene was the 6th child of Baron Raymond de Kerchove & from an early age he was enthralled by the sea; shortly after his marriage to Maisie the Baron started work on his “International Maritime Dictionary” & when in New York Rene used to be chauffeured from the Ritz Hotel to the New York Public Library in his Rolls-Royce. a distance of 1 ½ miles! The International Maritime Dictionary was finally published in 1948 by Van Nostrand; Baron de Kerchove had intended to publish a dictionary of edible marine organisms but sadly. although completed. this was never published & his final works were donated to the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco where they are today.
