VOLVO P1800 - DRIVE AWAY CLASSIC SWEDISH BEAUTY

Very reluctant sale. I have owned this car for some 6 years and had hoped to get it into showroom condition. Sadly I do not have the means to give it the full restoration the car merits but have instead over the years as funds allowed had various things done and components replaced (supplied by Brookhouse Volvo).   I was keen to keep the car on the road as its great fun to drive and a head turner – ‘what IS that car?!' If you know about the history and pedigree of the Volvo P1800 then you'll know this car will appreciate in value if maintained and restored.

Mechanically the car is in excellent order. The engine starts after a couple of turns and runs beautifully. The car has done many long trips and is happiest cruising at speed on long runs. The overdrive works perfectly – this is your 5th gear. 93k miles - the Irv Gordon p1800 has done 3 million! same engine.

New rocker cover gasket. New Toyo tubeless tyres all round – covered no more than 100miles. Springs and shocks. rear calipers. water pump. rake hoses have all been replaced in the last 5 years. Polypropylene bushes. copper brake lines. Front brakes – dual piston – stripped. cleaned. new dust covers. Master cylinder. stripped cleaned. new seals. Heater matrix. stripped. cleaned. new hoses. Recent alternator and radiator. New rear sender in the gas tank. The rev counter won't work. Lower door skins have been inexpertly repaired and sprayed. The car needs a respray.

Whilst I have maintained the engine and driving components of the car the same cannot be said of the interior and body work and this is where the money needs to be spent. There are a number of very shallow indents in the roof which are barely visible. At some point prior to my ownership the car had a bash on the driver side wing as this has been replaced. Areas of rust around the wheel arches – some have been welded. The underneath is solid – recent welding to the outriggers. The floor has recently been welded by the driver's footwall. Rust under the offside indicator. Rusted through on passenger side floor. The interior door panels and carpets have been removed but are present.

It is a testament to the quality of the Swedish steel that the body panels of a car made in 1971 are largely in excellent order. The front arches are original and show only light corrosion.

Ideally the car needs to be seen before purchase.  It should appeal to someone who either has the funds for a full strip down and restoration or someone who wants to enjoy driving one of these straight away and gradually do bits to it.   For more pics follow the link below.
