Crevier Classic Cars is pleased to offer our 1968 porsche 911 S Targa. The story of this rare and unique car is best told in the words of Chris Smith of the United Kingdom who interviewed the original owner of the car Champion race driver Jurgen Neuhaus in an article title " The Lost 100 Litre 911S of a Champion"

In March 2012 I received a call from a Texas car collector. he told me he had obtained a 1968 Porsche 911S Targa the previous year and thought there were some idiosyncrasies with the cars factory options. I had researched cars for this man before and for some reason. had always turned up the most interesting finds. I knew this was going somewhere.

“This cars got it's Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche (#11850164) but I need the Kartex to make the history complete” he quipped. “My guy's are having problems locating more information”. I told him I would take care of it and made the arrangements. Obtaining a copy of the original Kartex (Porsche's original purchase order from the archive) would be difficult as the laws in Germany changed several years ago and you cannot obtain them due to data protection law. But there is another who has this information. and he lives outside of Germany.

I had the Kartex back a short while after and was astounded. not only did it confirm #11850164 was ordered with luggage and matching ski bag. it confirmed the fixed solid - tinted & heated rear window. which is rare in the fact that this option was not documented available until February 1968. but this was built in 1967!

#11850164 was also ordered with a 100 litre fuel tank. in essence the car was spec'd as a Race/Rally Car but also having the Targa roof. I understood immediately that this car could not have been

ordered by the average man on the street. but by someone special who had “Pull” with Porsche. It then came to light. the car was ordered brand new in Wuppertal Germany by the Race Car Driver Jürgen Neuhaus!

I knew when the call was made to me the present owner thought there was something different or a little special about this car. but neither of us expected this outcome. I made some enquires and found Jürgen still living in Wuppertal to this day and at the age of 71 years he still instructs at

Hockenheim and Nurburgring! I thought calling him and arranging an interview would be something he may be interested in. I subsequently made the call and he asked me if it was just background information from his career I was interested in - but then told him about his old 911S.

“Your friend has my 911S? Please – come to my home and we can discuss this. ” I was shocked at his enthusiasm. maybe because I thought remembering the car may be an issue for him (or anyone)

as it was 45 years ago right?.

After scheduling the meet I left the UK and found my self in Wuppertal a week later at Jürgen's home. he is a big man in stature. his home filled with posters of race meetings and memorabilia from years past. He was excited to hear of his old car and wondered what had happened to it. “I was racing 911 T's. L's & S's at the time of ordering. I really enjoyed driving them. I had to have a car for the road and was spending a lot of time in Switzerland Skiing hence the luggage. ” I ordered the

car with a 100 litre tank because the cars I drove on the track were 100 litre. so it seemed right not to change this as it would have felt different in the handling. but good for longer journeys with the extra range”.

Jürgen was very enthused about the whole episode. he suggested we go for breakfast at a café a stones throw from his house. he continued to tell me about his early career. “I started in 1961 competing in Slalom and Hill climbing events driving Alfa's with good results. ” By 1967 Jürgen

was driving Porsche Carrera 6. in fact out of the 8 times he drove the car that year he won 7 times.

Early March 1967 was his first outing in the new model 911S. he came in first at Autoslalom Düsseldorf followed by another 13 wins in the car that season. the new model 911S was doing the business!

1968/69 was no different for Jürgen. he usually finished in first place if not in the top 3 using the 911 E & T platforms. Then 1970 came around.

The Interserie Championship was founded. it was a European version of the North American Can

Am Series. Many original Can Am cars. such as Lola. March. BRM. McLaren and Porsche provided great racing. the series became internationally recognised as a championship. and the first

Champion was Jürgen Neuhaus.

“I even won at Thruxton in the United Kingdom in September that year. it didn't matter where I raced really as I was driving the Porsche 917 – it was incredibly fast – more so than the other cars. ”

Jürgen had top three finishes in Belgium. four in Germany and a second place in Croft United Kingdom. it didn’t matter either way as Jürgen had secured the title this year. Jürgen was also involved with AutoKremer racing in the 70's as well “I recall the Auto Kremer cars were a lot faster than the Porsche Werks cars – Porsche did not like that!”

“So when did you sell #11850164?” He told me the car was sold in the early 70's to a “boy” in Wuppertal. “What do you mean a boy?” - “He was 18 years old and wanted a Ferrari I remember him telling me. he bought the car and used it for some time. ” I asked Jürgen if he knew what

happened to the car from that day on but he had no recollection. “But I can call him on the phone if you wish to speak?” I could not believe my ears. he had this guys number. He told me

he bumped into him from time to time living in the same town and recalled years later he did indeed purchase his long awaited 275 Ferrari. as well as other sports cars as he too became a car collector.

I accepted Jürgen's invitation to speak to him. “Klaus Werner” answered the call and recalled #11850164 immediately. “I remember Jürgen the day I viewed his 911S. he was well known for his

racing. I wanted a Ferrari but at 18 years old could just afford his 911S. ” I asked Werner what happened to the car when he sold it. he proceeded to tell me that Porsche Wuppertal where Jürgen

originally purchased the car approached him saying an American buyer was looking for early 911S models. “They told me that they would take care of the deal and supply me with a Brand New model if I sold – I only had to put a small amount into the deal if any. ” It was at this point I

recognised Werner's name on the Kartex as well! After the deal was made the car was shipped to Beverly Hills Porsche. shortly after it was purchased by a well known plastic surgeon who collected

Lamborghini's & Rare Model Porsche's. it remained in Beverley Hills for some time through the 80's & 90's until its arrival in Texas.

I asked Jürgen to verify the car by having him sign the COA & Kartex as well as pictures of the Car as it looks today “It was Tangerine Orange when I ordered it” I explained it was repainted in red at

some point in the United States. he remembered this immediately as Tangerine was the colour of his other 911's at that time.

We finished our coffee's and Jürgen handed me some race posters. the real deal from back in the day. I found this to be a great gesture. his enthusiasm still very much in the spirit of racing. I

returned to his home to collect my car. but not before we stopped at the Porsche Dealership in Wuppertal. without doubt a poignant end to the trip. We went into the dealership and every member of staff greeted us knowing Jürgen by name. it wasn’t just new cars in the showroom. out back in the shop they were restoring old 911's to showroom condition. a great finish to my trip. I said goodbye to Jürgen. he was packing to go to Hockenheim for the weekend “I am going to enjoy some racing and see some old friends!” he smiled. It had been a long journey to interview Jürgen but I was happy with the end result. I had all the

answers as to why this car received such a list of rare options. and before a time they had been previously documented before to boot. Either-way I had solved the riddle to #11850164. it is one rare-race optioned car indeed. but what would you expect being ordered by the European

Championship Winner of 1970 Jürgen Neuhaus .

I left Jürgen feeling enthused. not only had I met the Porsche icon. but he was still behind the wheel

of Race Cars at the age of 71 years – A True Gentleman and a True Champion!
