On offer today is a 1972 1800cc MG BGT converted to a Sebring V8
race car with an impressive structural and mechanical
specification. The 1972 MGB GT shell has been modified to take a V8
engine and 5 speed gearbox with all necessary reinforcements
required to ensure the structure copes with the extra power. The
shell was stripped. media blasted and fully seam welded with
additional transmission tunnel and suspension pick up point
strengtheners. Sebring wings were fitted all round with extra
fibreglass reinforcements added to the rear wings to alleviate the
common flexing and cracking problems of the standard units. New
suspension pickup points were fabricated with the installation of a
Rollcentre Racing Ltd FIA 1/2/5 x 2 bolt in roll cage that has been
welded in with additional bracing and welded flanges to the A and B
posts. This results in the suspension loads being dissipated
through the roll cage. To save further weight. a Lexan window kit
is fitted.

The mechanical specification includes an RPI Engineering Ltd Rover
4. 6ltr cross bolted. big journal V8 engine. Fuel is delivered
through the Le Mans fuel filler cap in the rear quarter pillar to
an aluminium touring fuel tank; a further smaller composite race
fuel cell is located within the boot area. Twin facet fuel pumps. br/>one for each fuel tank. feed the Edelbrok Performance Series
carburettor directing the mixture through a Rover V8 Edelbrock
performance dual-plane inlet manifold. Exhaust extraction is via
two MG RV8 stainless steel exhaust manifolds and full stainless
steel dual exhaust system. Ignition spark is supplied by the
Mallory Dual Point distributor. The gearbox is a 5 speed R380 unit.
To keep things on track. the front suspension is fully rose jointed
with newly fabricated unequal length wishbones suspended with AVO
coil over shock absorbers to a strengthened modified cross member.
Four pot Mazda RX7 disc brakes and brake callipers are provided at
the front. To the rear. a rebuilt narrowed Rover SD1 back axle with
a new crown wheel and pinion. bearings and a Quaife LSD has been
fitted. All this is located with 4 fully rose jointed radius arms
and suspended on AVO coil over shock absorbers. The axle has been
modified to take Mazda RX7 rear discs and twin pot brake callipers.
A race pedal box with dash mounted bias adjuster. enabling
front/rear brake bias adjustment by the driver. has also been
fitted. Minilite wheels compliment the dark green coachwork.

The vehicle is only being offered as our vendor is retiring to his
yacht and will therefore no longer have the land based storage at
his home. At the time of writing. the car was not quite complete
but is currently being fitted out. The vendor advises that the
works required should be completed by the time of sale and
anticipates that it will arrive with a fresh MoT test certificate.
When one considers the specification and works carried out. this
Big Block V8 MG represents excellent value. given the estimate. and
is surely an opportunity not to be missed.
