The Rolls-Royce 20/25 was built between 1929 and 1936 and
succeeded the 20hp as Rolls-Royce's 'small car'. It was intended to
appeal to owner drivers but many were sold to customers with
chauffeurs. The in-line 6 cylinder overhead valve engine was
similar to that used in the 20HP but was enlarged to 3699cc by
increasing the bore from 76mm to 82mm with the stroke remaining at
114mm. A single Rolls-Royce carburettor was used and both coil and
magneto ignition was fitted. The four speed gearbox was mounted in
unit with the engine and a traditional right hand change used.
Synchromesh was fitted to third and top gears from 1932. The
substantial chassis had rigid front and rear axles suspended by
half elliptic springs with braking on all four wheels assisted by a
mechanical servo. Separate rear brakes were fitted for the
handbrake. The famous Rolls-Royce radiator with triangular top was
used with vertical louvres. the angle of which could be adjusted to
control engine cooling. The larger engine also allowed the top
speed to increase but many owners had large limousine bodies fitted
to the chassis with the predictable degradation of
performance.

The 1935 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Tickford Silver Jubilee Cabriolet by
Salmons was built to special order to celebrate the Silver Jubilee
of King George V. Tickford was the trade name for a wind-down
fabric roof. able to be raised and lowered using a handle which was
placed into the mechanism above the lefthand rear wing. Designed by
Arthur H. Dalby-Balls in 1925. these were exclusively made by
Salmons & Sons Ltd. . who took the name from their Tickford
Street location in Newport Pagnell. Buckinghamshire. Purchased by
the vendor's husband in 1980. the car was used sparingly as part of
a wedding fleet and at Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club rallies. and
being an engineer he maintained the car to the highest of
standards. including removing and overhauling the hood mechanism. br/>which we can confirm works as well now as when it was new. This
20/25 was taken off the road in 2002 due to the owner's ill heath
but the maintenance continued and the car runs and drives well.
This very original Rolls-Royce 20/25 is finished in black with grey
inserts. black leather seats and a fawn coloured roof and is
supplied with a V5C registration document. a copy of the original
bill of sale. a copy of the original chassis cards. both showing
that the car was ordered from new with this body from Salmons. br/>handbook. mascot and town cap. A very rare. rather splendid. four
door cabriolet.
