The Messerschmitt KR200 is a three-wheeled bubble car designed
by the aircraft engineer Fritz Fend and produced in the factory of
the German manufacturer from 1955 to 1964. Messerschmitt. br/>temporarily not allowed to manufacture aircraft. had turned its
resources to producing other commodities; in 1952 Fend approached
Messerschmitt with the idea of manufacturing small motor vehicles.
The first of Fend's vehicles to enter production was the KR175. the
title 'Kabinenroller' means 'scooter with cabin'. The narrow body. br/>and corresponding low frontal area. was achieved with tandem
seating which also allowed the body to taper like an aircraft
fuselage; the fuel consumption of the car was reported to be 87mpg
with a top speed of 65mph if you were brave enough. Production of
the KR200 was heavily reduced in 1962 and ceased in 1964 as sales
had been dropping for a number of years. The KR200 ran on a 191cc
Fichtel & Sachs air-cooled single cylinder two-stroke engine
positioned in front of the rear wheel. the engine had two sets of
contact points and. to reverse. the engine was stopped. then
restarted. going backwards.

This KR200 arrived early in the production cycle and is thought
to be the third oldest in the world. The previous owner had been
the custodian of this charming little car for over 30 years and
after rescuing it from a field when 462 NPU was in a sorry state. br/>embarked on a restoration project. A disc with many photos is
included in the history file showing the car's interesting life
since the restoration; even being used as a wedding car. The
restorer certainly had confidence in his own ability as the car
appears to have been driven all over Europe. Photos also exist of
the Messerschmitt being exhibited at Beaulieu as part of the 'Weird
Cars' theme. Supplied with a V5 registration document and a small
amount of paperwork. although the C. D. covers the recent history in
a comprehensive manner. this KR200 will require a little time and
investment to bring it back to standard. but represents an ideal
opportunity to purchase an early Messerschmitt with a fascinating
history.
