1984 Mercedes-Benz 500SL(ATTN eBay: This is a Euro Spec Car with a Euro VIN: The VIN # is: WDB1070461009132)This is a 2 owner 500SL, imported into the US in 1986, it has 50 State FEDERAL emissions approvalLapis BlueGrey Leather InteriorBlue Soft TopColor Matched Hard TopFirst, a little history on the 500SL, and how it differs from other R107's. In this case the 450SL, and the latter 560SL. Both the 450SL and 560SL were vastly different cars then the 500SL, in a multitude of ways. First of all, the 500SL had different bumpers, or in the trade, we call them "short bumpers"...the US versions...450/560SL had DOT bumpers which protruded and comparatively speaking...look awful. Also, to meet US DOT standards...they had "twin headlights"...while the European counterparts...280/500 had short bumpers, single sealed beam headlights...and of course different engines. The 4.5 liter in the 450SL with it's 4.5 liter V8 made a whopping 180hp and the 560SL with its 5.6 litter V8 made a respectable 227hp. All the while, in Europe, the mighty 500SL was offered...with it's good looks, and its 5.0 V8 made 229hp...with loads more torque and better throttle response due to far less emission equipment. While the 500SL was the most desirable model of all R107's. It was not available in the United States...ever. They were imported via the grey market to the States over the years. This is where the PROBLEM lies...and this is the problem I have with these cars. Most were imported in the past 10-15 years or so when these cars became collectable. speedometers were swapped with junkyard 560SL units...so you never really know how many miles are ACTUALLY on the car...no traceability...no known history, registration issues due to improper importation, 48 State emissions...(can't register in California)...they become mystery cars...I am a collector that must know everything about a car. This car was imported in 1986 by it's original owner...and stayed with that owner for decades. This car actually "has" a history...a Carfax...a Autocheck...Service Records. You almost never EVER see that with these cars. It was properly imported very EARLY...and you can register it in all 50 States...which adds to the value. The car has 60K KM or 38,000 miles on it. It is as close to ALL original as I've ever seen in a 500SL. Lapis Blue exterior is impeccable given it is 37 years old. This car has zero rust. No rust in the rear pans, spare well, jacking holes, bulkhead...I know R107's...its DRY. The early import 500SL's command a 40% premium over a comparable 1989 560SL....I'm offering this car at a 560SL price...a realistic 560SL price...this car WILL sell.Beautiful interior, almost zero bolster wear. The veneers on the import cars were a lighter wood than the American cars...this is correct, and these veneers are not sun bleached. The original Becker is stored in a box. If I had to complain about anything on the interior...it would be the foam in the sun visors is degrading...$50 fix...(every one of these cars is like this) and there is a small 1/2" piece of piping on the drivers seat that is damaged. These are absolutely minor but...I like full disclosure. The interior could use a very good detailing and it will show as new. The car has a factory kinder seat, not a aftermarket rear seat. These were only factory options on the Euro cars...contrary to popular belief...every 560SL with a rear seat...is aftermarket. The car also has factory heated seats...once again never available on the US cars. Exterior is simply amazing. The car is 80% original paint. The original owner was not a fan of the deck lid wing, and had it removed and the decklid paint blended and the mounting holes welded up...excellent job. I have to agree with the original owner...it just looks better this way. The rest of the car is 4-6 mils thickness...which is what we normally see on a original car. The chrome and brightwork is basically perfect, all the glass is original, including the original "Daimler-Benz" windshield. The convertible top...is perfect...I think it has only been used a handful of times and shows absolutely no signs of age...it looks like it was just replaced....but it is 37 years old. The hard top is...perfect, just like all or them. The original Michelin spare has never been used. The car runs and drives excellent, with no noise, appreciable leaks, smoking on startup, etc. The car is as tight as when it was new, and runs very strong. The car has a brand new battery and new $1,200 Goodyear tires. The car hasn't been driven much recently, and while everything works and the car is "issue free"...I absolutely would do a service on the car, (fluids changed, etc.) and have it cut and buffed....and there's nothing else to do. This is something I typically do...but due to time constraints...you can make it shiny. The car has all its German books, maintenance book, service records...perfect Carfax and Autocheck. I have been selling on eBay for well over 10 years...have a excellent reputation for accuracy. I am a collector, and not a dealer. This is a hobby for me, and as such, should be fun. I enjoy these cars. I'm looking for a easy...drama free transaction. I don't need messages with lowball offers, etc. I know what I have, and while I'm happy to sell it for a fair price, I don't need the money and this is no fire sale. Car is advertised on other venues and this auction is subject to being ended at anytime...as this vehicle is for sale outside of eBay as well. I'm happy to assist with shipping, and have some excellent shippers in my rolodex that I use to move my collection. I'd love to talk to serious and qualified buyers. My cell is 630-200-3860...please text me first, because out of habit I tend to not respond to out of State callers.
