Leading into the third year of sales, the GTO continued to find sales soaring in popularity. Because of this, GM finally gave the GTO its own model line versus being a performance package option for the Lemans model series. Also in 1966, Pontiac was already developing a new engine for the 1967 production year making this the last of the 389ci V8 examples ever made! Moreover, it would be the last GTO available with a tri-power carburetion option for the horsepower hungry buyers! The stacked headlights, new aggressive grill and louvered taillights made these cars as sinister as they are iconic to the muscle car collectors!

This gorgeous 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible is finished in code correct N- Burgundy over 224- Parchment vinyl bucket seat interior with matching White top! Powered by a 389ci-3x2bbl V8 mated to an automatic transmission and factory 3.23 rear end! Other features include correct 14" Rally I wheels with Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports Redline tires measuring F70-14, power steering, center console, AM radio, outside remote mirror, all Soft-Ray tinted glass, glove box lamp, day/night rearview mirror, and Rally gauges with dash tachometer!

According to the zone and dealer code recorded on the original build manifest, this GTO sold new from Mallory Pontiac-Buick right here in St. Louis in early spring 1966. With its earliest ownership history unknown, we do know it never strayed too far from the area. The most recent owners from rural Pike County, Missouri allocated the car in approximately 2001 to commence a full restoration. As a prominent Pontiac collector and enthusiast, this owner's expertise also included many date-code correct performance parts. Under the hood of this GTO now breathes a factory XS-coded 389ci Tri-power Ram Air V8 originally producing 360 horsepower mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. Obviously, the Ram Air tray and functional hood scoops are not active at this time, and an upgraded Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed automatic was selected to replace the factory 2-speed Powerglide automatic this GTO was born with.

The body is remarkable solid and rust free throughout. We found all panel fitment and gaps matching factory expectations with everything opening and closing with ease! The professionally refinished exterior paint remains remarkable in presentation, buried underneath multiple layers of clear coat, including the black pinstripe along the body. The interior upholstery and convertible top were completely replaced with new material right down to the sun visors. The Soft-Ray side window glass remains intact, with a new windshield in place of the original with fresh weather seals throughout. The dash instrumentation was upgraded to house full instrumentation with a tachometer. Everything is in working order including the original AM radio. And subtle details such as the factory style T3 headlamps should not be overlooked when trying to retain a factory style presentation. With his unfortunate passing in 2018, this wonderful GTO stayed in the family by going on to his daughter in nearby Lincoln County, Missouri.

She would take on the task of careful ownership with a full service in September 2018 to ensure it was ready for the road with her family. This involved a complete brake rebuild with new master cylinder, all brake cylinders, new springs & adjusters, grease seals, front & rear hoses, and all new fluid; rebuilt front suspension with new upper & lower ball joints, and sway bar links; spark plugs, condenser, points, with fresh engine and differential fluids. The transmission would be completely overhauled with new clutches & seals, modular valve, shaft seals, bushings, new speedo gears, valve body kit, filter, convertor, and stainless steel cooling lines. New rear shocks, fresh battery, and overall engine tune would satisfy her readiness for the road!

In the summer of 2019, new front wheel bearings, hubs, and fresh brake drums were fitted. It continues to start and run with ease, performing wonderfully as a genuine street cruiser! It will come with the Pontiac Historical Services documentation and registration records back to 2002, as well as recent service receipts. This is a unique opportunity for a GTO collector! Please call with any additional questions or to schedule arrangements to view this car in person! Thanks for looking!
