1970 Dodge Super Bee

What makes it special: The Super Bee was Dodge's muscle car produced from 1968 through 1971 model years. The Super Bee name got its origin due to the "B-Body" designation that was given to mid-sized Chrysler models, including the Road Runner and Charger. What made it famous: When the Dodge Coronet line moved to 4-door and station wagon body styles, the Super Bee model was moved over to the Dodge Charger platform. Being that there was an "R/T" Charger model already, the "Super Bee" Charger was promoted as the low-priced model at the time. There were distinctive features for the "Super Bee" model of 1970 such as a spit front bumper and grill along with the power bulge hood.

For consignment we have a Top Banana colored radical front end designed, power bulge hood, rear quarter adorned with a "tweezer stripe" and bee badged, 383ci classic muscle car. It's a Super Bee from 1970 and from the white hat boys right smack in the middle of the muscle car madness of the late 60's and early 70's. You'll need to see this beauty in person, and you will quickly come to the realization we are not monkeying around with this one!

Exterior
Top Banana Yellow, applied over laser-straight bodywork and some of the most perfectly aligned panels I've ever seen, this is a seriously good-looking car. The long nose/short deck styling made popular with the pony cars translated well to the B-body series and this one looks fast just sitting still. Loaded with all the eye-popping graphics available, including the longitudinal tape stripes and Super Bee graphic on the rear quarters. There's no color combination more fitting for a car such as this and seeing it in person you'll absolutely go ape! Add in the split front grille with its "bee-like" eye design in perpetual mad eyebrows design, and the Top Banana hood cascading downward between the "eyes" and this car looks plenty aggressive, even if it didn't have a nasty 440 living underneath. The trim and bright work have been expertly restored as well. Note that this car carries the dual open headlamps, which work as they should, as well as the lower grille-mounted turn signal indicators. The emblems are bright and crisp, including the 383 Magnum call outs on the front quarters and Super Bee logos on the rear quarters. As a link to the past, the taillights are housed in an brushed stainless panel, and the animated and goggled bee badge, and the two exhaust tips peek out from below the rear bumper. To finish off all 4 corners, 14-inch Mopar road wheels do the job swimmingly, and are wrapped with Daytona raised white letter radial classic tires. Careful, don't slip!

Interior
This '70 Super Bee also received an all-new interior which, in typical Mopar fashion, was stylish and well-executed. With comfortable front bench with a split back, and rear bench, all in black, a simple dashboard that includes a 150mph speedometer, and upscale wood grain appliqus that actually look quite convincing, it's a great place to spend a few hours listening to the music from the 383 cubes under the hood. Also note the wood adorned pistol-grip Hurst shifter poking up in front of the supple black vinyl bench-after all, this was still intended to be a budget supercar. A Music Master AM OEM Chrysler radio still lives in the dash, which has a bit of a rough cutout into the wood grain from when an aftermarket stereo once resided. Plenty of black textured vinyl is molded into form for the lower dash, and on the passenger's side we note a glovebox. Door panels show slight sagging but are clean and original, a sagging and wrinkled headliner is above and matching black clean carpeting topped with black floor mats complete the interior appointments, making this a car that's ready to show or drive at almost any level. Even the trunk is beautifully finished, with more near-flawless Top Banana paint, a correct fitted mat showing just a few wrinkles and a full-size spare with complete jack assembly.

Drivetrain
The muscle car era wasn't quite over in 1970, and the guys at Dodge definitely didn't get the memo. With super-low production numbers, we now see an orange painted block and valve covering 383ci V8 circa March 28th, 1969 casting date and totally rebuilt within the pristine engine bay. This has been restored to be as original as possible even down to the hoses and wiring (now THAT'S attention to detail!). There is a single 4-barrel Holley carburetor on top which feeds the mill through an Edelbrock intake manifold and a numbers matching A833 New Process 4-speed manual transmission on back that came with the car from the factory. The rear axle is an 8-3/4 inch 3.23 geared Suregrip.

Undercarriage
A rust and dirt free coating of rustproofing covers the straight steel panels and unibody underneath. Headers and a shiny Turbo muffler exhaust are noted snaking their way rearward underneath, and on either side are front torsion bar suspension, and leaf springs on the back. Manual drum brakes are on all 4 corners to provide the whoa factor.

Drive-Ability
We clamored to get into this star of magazine car, and it did not disappoint. Breathe all the 1970 technology in and fire it up, we are off to the test track. Here we not only had some fun but were very impressed as to how well this car runs, accelerates, handles and stops. All was working and in fine condition for this economy muscle car. Although don't sneeze at the 383ci engine as it still has way good capabilities to "peel" out!

About as correct as it's gonna get, this great example, painstakingly restored and rebuilt back to factory specs, now a rare example of the 1970 Charger Super Bee awaiting to sting your competition. Now that's as sweet as honey! Our consignor has in his possession and will include with the sale the original 383ci V8 the car was born with.
