Now available in our Philly location is a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger. The car was originally labeled the Thunderbolt. Shortly before its public unveiling at the New York Motor Show in April 1964 the car was renamed from Thunderbolt to Tiger. The Sunbeam Tiger is a high-performance V8 version of the British Rootes Group's Sunbeam Alpine roadster. designed in part by American car designer and racing driver Carroll Shelby and produced from 1964 until 1967. Shelby had carried out a similar V8 conversion on the AC Cobra. and hoped to be offered the contract to produce the Tiger at his facility in America. Rootes decided instead to contract the assembly work to Jensen at West Bromwich in England. and pay Shelby a royalty on every car produced. Installing such a large engine in a relatively small vehicle required some modifications. although the exterior sheet metal remained essentially the same as the Alpine's. Necessary chassis modifications included moving from the Burman recirculating ball steering mechanism to a more modern rack and pinion system. Although twice as powerful as the Alpine. the Tiger is only about twenty per cent heavier. but the extra weight of the larger engine required some minor suspension modifications. The Ford V8 as fitted to the Tiger produced 164 bhp (122 kW) @ 4400 rpm. sufficient to give the car a 0–60 mph (97 km/h) time of 8. 6 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph (190 km/h). This Tiger has had a complete rotisserie restoration since being purchased from the estate of the original owner in 2012. This fine example of an ever-appreciating classic has been certified by the Sunbeam Tiger Owners Association. It was completely disassembled and all repairs to the body were done in metal. All the wiring and rubber weather-stripping was replaced. The original Ford 260 small block was rebuilt by Brian Roche Racing Engines of Baltimore. The original wooden steering wheel was reconditioned by Bruce Crawford. Everything on the car has been removed and restored or replaced. The interior is in like new condition with black pebble grain vinyl and black high-quality wool carpeting from Pro – prep interiors. The exterior is finished in the correct #86 Forest Green. There have been less than 50 miles put on this beauty since the completion of the restoration. Don’ miss the opportunity to own one of the rarest Classic Cars ever produced. These cars are going up in value. We all know how popular Carroll Shelby’s other little cars are. The Tiger could easily become as popular.
