Perhaps the most archetypal example of the hot rodder’s art. the 1932 Ford 3-window coupe is no longer a mere automobile. but is now an icon. The fenderless hi-boy typifies the lightweight. high-performance spirit of early hot rodding. paring the little Ford coupe down to its bare essentials: lots of engine. few creature comforts. maximum speed. In the decades since World War II. the hi-boy has evolved. coming to embody all the traits that typify the best of custom car building. including impeccable build quality. artistic interiors. and superlative drivability. Today. being fast is simply not enough. these cars must also be comfortable and reliable. and if they’re pretty enough to attract the eye. well. that’s part of the package as well.

This incredible 1932 Ford 3-window coupe was professionally built by Lobeck’s V8 Shop. Looking it over. it isn’t hard to see where a staggering $100. 00 was spent. as it exemplifies the finest workmanship and quality in every single detail. The body is an Outlaw fiberglass reproduction. but that only means that it was relatively easy to make it look spectacular. Fit and finish are. of course. off-the-charts nice and thanks to the ministrations of experts. there are layers of detail that are only apparent upon close inspection. The front-opening doors fit so well that they need little more than a gentle push to close and the gaps surrounding them are even enough to pass Lexus’s ball bearing test. There’s not a wave or visible seam in the exterior finish. and this particular hi-boy has foregone the usual graphics and flames to capture a smooth. sleek look that’s understated (well. as understated as such a car can get. anyway). The multi-stage urethane paint is spectacular. shifting from blue to purple depending on the light and showing a shine that’s deep enough to swim in. With just over 3300 miles since the build was completed and expert care and maintenance since then. it still looks fresh and needs nothing to look its best today. There’s also a removable steel hood with a 2-seat Thunderbird-style scoop. just to set this one apart from the crowd.

Traditional styling touches abound. from the painted ’32 Ford grille shell with stainless insert to the massive exhaust headers (with dumps) to the sleek taillight pods neatly nestled into the lower body. a nice contrast to all the other ’32 Fords with ’39 Ford LEDs or some flush-mount setup. Shaved handles mean that there’s a remote to open both doors and the trunk is power-actuated for extra style points at a show.

The black leather interior was custom-stitched just for this car by the pros at Portage Trim and it eschews tradition for modern comfort. The buckets are deep and supportive. with contrasting white stitching on the French seams. and you’ll note the asymmetric pattern that adds interest. Matching door panels and even a black leather headliner with overhead console tie it all together quite neatly and give it a very polished feel from behind the wheel. A tilt column and billet wheel make it easy to get comfortable in the surprisingly spacious coupe. and there’s a fully array of suitably vintage-looking Stewart Warner instruments across the color-matched dash. Even the foot pedals are trick little works of art in chrome and rubber that look wonderfully antique. Entertainment is via an Alpine AM/FM/CD stereo in the overhead console. and thanks to layers of DynaMat insulation throughout the cabin. it’s impressively hushed and comfortable inside. even with that big stroker motor doing its thing up front. Hit the button and the power trunk lid opens to reveal a fully upholstered trunk with large Harwood fuel cell. Optima battery. and expert workmanship throughout. from the fuel system to the leather side panels.

A car like this is often defined by its engine. and performance was the primary motivation behind the 388 cubic inch small block Chevy powerplant. Dynoing at more than 450 horsepower. it certainly has the credentials to make it a serious threat on the street or at the track. The bottom end is composed a Crower crank. Oliver billet rods. and 10. 5:1 Ross forged aluminum pistons. A big Demon carburetor on a McFarland intake feeds the fuel and air to a set of aluminum Dart 220 heads. while a Crane solid lifter cam and T&D shaft-mount rockers give it that raucous hot rod sound. Gorgeous Dynatech headers (ceramic-coated. of course) manage the exhaust. complete with dumps that can be uncorked at a moment’s notice for the complete experience. And speaking of the exhaust. it’s a beautiful hand-fabricated stainless system (also ceramic coated) with magnificent TIG welds throughout. clearly the work of an artist at the top of his game and reportedly cost over $2500 all by itself. The block is color-matched to the bodywork and shows very little evidence of use and no peeling or flaking due to heat cycling. so it’s still ready to hit the cruise nights. All the work is professional-grade and impressive in every way possible. from the ultra-tidy plumbing and wiring to the heavy-duty cooling fan on the big radiator up front. It starts easily. idles happily in the heat. and doesn’t get cranky thanks to expert tuning and a proven combination.

The engine is backed by a Richmond 6-speed manual transmission. which makes for raucous around-town driving and easy cruising on the interstates. even with the 4. 56 gears out back. It’s carried by a custom tube frame chassis with ground and finished welds for a seamless look. then was covered by more gorgeous purple paint. The suspension uses Heidt’s chrome A-arms and coil-overs up front and a 4-link out back. so it rides and handles competently without punishing the occupants on rough pavement. That rear axle is a fully polished FAB9 from Chassisworks with a Strange 4. 56 limited slip center section and axles. Please take a few moments to note the spectacular welds on the bracketry. particularly the lower shock mounts on the axle housing. all indicative of this car's incredible build quality. There’s a disc brake at each corner and polished Billet Specialties wheels look like vintage Halibrands wearing a traditional big-n-little combination of 26x7. 50-15 front and 33x19. 50-15 rear Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires.

So why is this incredible car so affordable? The hydraulic throw-out bearing has leaked and needs to be replaced. which Vintage Motor Cars can arrange prior to delivery. Use Buy It Now! and we will replace the throw-out bearing and clutch free of charge!

So if you’re a fan of tradition. craftsmanship. and spectacular showmanship (all the key ingredients of a true hot rodder). this ’32 Ford delivers. With a weekend of effort. it will be a first-class rod that absolutely looks like a six-figure build and runs superbly. If you’re looking for a pro-built rod at a deep. deep discount. this is a fantastic opportunity for the talented hobbyist.
