Conceived in the late 1950s and launched in 1962. the MGB would turn out to be one of the most successful sports cars of all time. Attractively styled. cheap to run and easily maintained by the home mechanic. the 'B' carried on MG's traditional role of providing affordable. sports car motoring for the ordinary enthusiast. The MGB was mechanically similar to the preceding MGA. though with heavier. unitary construction bodyshell. To compensate for the newcomer's increased weight the existing B-Series engine was stretched to 1. 98cc. while the MGB's aerodynamically efficient lines made the most of the maximum available 95bhp to achieve a top speed. which just topped 100mph.
A 'right first time' design that changed little over the years apart from the adoption of a five-main-bearing engine in 1965. a minor facelift for 1970 and the adoption of plastic bumpers (to comply with US legislation) for 1975. the 'B' enjoyed a lengthy production life and sales success. Its popularity remaining undiminished today. the classic MGB is one of the easiest sports cars of its era to run and maintain in the 21st Century. being served by a worldwide industry of spare parts and service providers.
The car on offer here. was subject to a comprehensive professional restoration. finished in the ever-popular and stylish British racing green. with fresh black interior and new top. Having covered only a couple of thousand miles since full restoration. the car is presented in very condition throughout.
Paint is in excellent in the original BRG colour. Panel fit on this absolutely rust-free car is about perfect. Chrome is very good. with very minor pitting. The scuff-free wheels are shod with new tires. The brand new soft top is an excellent fit on a restored mechanism.
The interior is also in very good to excellent condition. There is no wear to any surfaces including all panels. seats and carpet. Everything feels fresh and new. All gauges work perfectly. The car comes with a somewhat tatty hard top.
Mechanically. the car is as good as it looks. It is fresh from a full service. clutch master cylinder. and exhaust to ready it for sale. The engine has been gone through thoroughly and is in fine tune. It is bright and responsive with good power. It is mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox with fresh clutch. All ancillaries were refurbished or replaced as needed. The suspension feels taught with no squeaks or rattles. and the steering is light and precise. The brakes work perfectly well. The car handles well and is an absolute joy to drive.
The previous owner. who was a mechanic and very familiar with the MGB. told me that the car was an original California car. though the registration and license plates had fallen off the DMV system. and the restoration costs were in excess of $10. 00 in parts alone.
The car is a turnkey example of the definitive British sportscar. ready to drive anywhere and enjoy.
