1972 MK1 Triumph Stag - WVG 331L

The first owner purchased the Stag in Sept 1972 from Duff Morgan in Dereham Road. Norwich and serviced the car there till 1976 followed by the York based Armstrong-Massey. At that time Armstrongs were the main British Leyland dealers in the area. and are now a Land Rover dealership.

Original engine overheated and was overhauled on 14th February 1975 at 17. 13 miles. which was covered under warranty.

In 1978. as Armstrong-Massey were moving out of York. they phoned the first owner offering a brand new Stag engine. which was sitting in their store room for "shelf-price" fitted. so at 42. 00 miles. the current engine was fitted.

The Stag was used as the owners primary transport from new until he retired in 2003. and was serviced and MOT'd continually.

From 2003 till 2012 it sat in the owners garage. covering 50-100 miles a year. but continued to be serviced and MOT'd including bodywork checks and repairs. annually.

On 31st January 2012. the Stag was sold to it's second owner in part exchange for solar panel work. and until my purchase on the 1st June 2012. I have no history.

Last June. trawling through eBay. I found the Stag for sale from a dealer in Yorkshire. I was out of the country at the time. so did what everybody said you should never do with a classic car - bid without first viewing! I won the auction. came back home. and arranged for the Stag to be trailered back to Bath.

The bodywork. although in good condition. needed a bit of touching up. but more importantly. where the Stag had sat for the last 9 years. all the rubbers had started to perish. and she was pouring out oil. I contacted my local classic car mechanic. who knows Stags well. and arranged for them do a complete mechanical overhaul.

£10. 47 later. she had a newly reconditioned gearbox. steering rack. differential. power-steering drive belt. drive shafts. screen wash pump and the engine had new timing chains. new gaskets. and was leak free. I also had a Kenlowe electric cooling fan fitted. and the radiator reverse flushed to make sure she was free from the chance of overheating.

Inside. the door locks now worked. the electric windows opened. and I had the drivers seat professionally restored (The passenger seat was in much better condition. and I just fitted new seat fabric. )

I had a fantastic end of summer with the top down. used her regularly during the winter. but. on Mothers day this year. heading over to see my mum. after filling up with petrol. I noticed the temperature gauge going up and up. I stopped. let her cool off. then called out the AA who towed me home.

Sadly the Stag wasn't happy. and warped the cylinder head.

Since this. I've had the cylinder heads hardened and re-skimmed. and the cylinder head gasket replaced at a cost of £1. 00. Just when the engine was back together. and I was about to collect from the garage. I got a call saying that the coolant was mixing with the oil in the Sump. Ouch.

Because of this. my love affair for Stags is over. and I'm selling her as a non-runner.

I suspect she'll need a new engine block (but it may be something much easier to deal with!). Not too big a job if you can do it yourself. or can get it done on the cheap. but I have neither the time or willpower!

I have however just put her through the MOT. so she will come with 12 months. and is Tax exempt.

So in summary:
- 3 owners from new (one for 40 years)
- Meticulously serviced.
- Good bodywork
- New gearbox. cylinder heads. steering rack. differential. professionally restored drivers seat and much more totalling £10. 47. 47 in August 2012
- New original Stag alloys - the original steel wheels and hub caps are also included
- The hard top has been attached in places by the tin worm. and needs new seals. but is included.
- I suspect it needs a new engine block (but could be something much easier!)
- New passenger and drivers side front carpets
- A great CD / MP3 / Aux-in head unit
- MK1 hood which has the extra quarter-lights (slight damage to the clear rear window)
- Regularly under-sealed from New
- Electronic ignition
- Recent new fuel pump and battery

The photos with the hard top removed were taken in March this year. and the photos with the hard top and steel wheels were taken when I purchased the Stag in June 2012.

I've a ton more photos which I can send across. I'll add anything I've forgotten. as I'm sure to have missed the most important bits!

The Stag is located in South Somerset - I recommend you view before you bid. any bid will be binding. and the Stag is advertised else where. so the auction may end early.

Any questions - anything at all. my email address is Marcus@websky. co. uk. and mobile is 07951 581446.

All the very best bidding!

On 14-Oct-13 at 17:35:31 BST. seller added the following information:

Forgot to mention. it has an Insurance Agreed Value of £11. 00.

I'm sure there's something else I've forgotten. but will update again when I remember!!
