STANLEY STEAMER

This Stanley was purchased in driveable but unrestored condition from Carl Amsley. a long time Stanley Steam car rebuilder. in February 1996.   He got this Stanley on trade from Mr. Strong who had stored it in his car collection inside for many years.   The car was orginally bought by a Mr. Schuster in Chicago. Illinois.

A complete off frame restoration was done on the car in the winter and spring of 1996.    In 1997 a new boiler and burner were installed.   To keep the car looking new the wooden wheels have been repainted and tires. liners and tubes replaced.   The Stanley is always stored in a temperature controlled environment.

This Stanley has always been an excellent runner.   It has been driven over Trail Ridge Road in the Rocky Mountain National Park.    A feed water heater was added to preheat the water going into the boiler.   Once this car is steamed up it has been able to maintain up to 55 mph on level ground.   Also. as this is a condensing Stanley. while carrying only about 25 gallons of water. 75 to 90 miles per water fillup is not uncommon according to terrain driving through.

This Stanley has a California top which looks like a convertible top but does not fold down.   The top was completely rebuilt and even has a headliner in it.   New side curtains were made making the car capable of being driven in any weather.   We were quite comfortable driving over The Trail Ridge Road when it was only 32 deg.  F outside.

There are almost too many things to say about this car.   Inside seats and door panels are all leather. new carpet was installed that matched the original tweed.   The new boiler was built with additional fire tubes 821 total where most 24" boilers have only 691 fire tubes.   This is one of the reasons this car steams so well. along with the feed water heater.   Thermocouples were installed when the boiler was rebuilt and replumbed.   Readings from those thermocouples show that with 75 deg. F ambient temperature water in the reserve water tank just after a couple miles driving the water temperature coming out of the feedwater heater is around 211 deg. F.   Once you have driven about 10 miles the water in the reserve water tank reaches about 211 deg. F.   At this time. nbsp;once this water is fed through the feedwater heater the water temperature going into the boiler is about 235 deg. F.   This is when this car really steams.   It drives as if it were supercharged.   These thremocouples are still installed in the car and still functional.

Safety features added to the car include front and rear directional signals with an additonal right rear brake/directional light and outside rear view mirrors.   The car comes with the original 6 volt electrical system which works.   The car also has an ahooga horn and steam whistle.   I have entered this car in numerous car shows and have almost always received 1st place in my category and more best of shows than you can count on your fingers.   See trophy case picture.   This is one of the most original. best running and looking condensing Stanley's around.

There are many more things I could say about the car. but will let you ask any questions you might have.
