TR4a project for sale.
With much regret we are selling our TR4a project after a lot of the work has been done. but there is still a way to go. Being offered a job half way round the world has rather forced our hand…
This is not a standard ‘half finished' restoration project where someone has reached the limit of their patience. talent or wallet – rather the project is too expensive to move to another continent.   As a result available to buy is a project which has been approached with a great deal of attention to detail. and with the right further input should make an amazing car for someone.
The car comes with a Surrey Top. re-engineered gearbox (overdrive fitted). differential and driveshafts as well as a CTM engineering strengthened chassis. The vast majority of the body tub and panels have been repaired with a little left to do prior to paint. All smaller parts (eg running gear) have been restored as appropriate and a ready to refit. There are several new or replacement parts such as Andrew Turner refurbished carbs. a additional set of mint instruments and spare sets of seats.
All work on the car has been documented using extensive digital photographs which are included. We bought the TR4a from Arizona (all import paperwork is of course available) where it had laid unused for several years. Here are some pictures of it prior to leaving the USA;

It was brought over and work done on it. in a ridiculously systematic and retentive way. I am a clinical research scientist by trade. and everything was done to the same level of organisation as used at work.   All the parts were photographed in situ. then removed from the car and numbered. photographed with their number and then cleaned. bead blasted as needed and then repainted using professional etch black. Once restored the parts were then stored wrapped in cotton and bubblewrap. and are now in stacking commercial storage containers ready to be replaced. There is a ledger recording all the parts. their location. state of the part when removed. and whether it has been restored. or if it needs replacing. We have over 2500 digital pictures of the car being taken apart. and the laptop with all the photos on comes with the project.   Some photos of this process with the master cylinder support bracket. a headlamp body and the heater….

Restored parts now in commercial storage boxes. ready for refitting and the ledger with all the records of where the parts are located.

Body and Panels;
The body tub and panels were sent to Surface Processing limited in Dudley and were  dipped to remove paint. rust underseal etc. All the body work was done after this.
Tub; The outer sills were replaced. and other areas addressed as needed. for example the right hand side B pillar. battery shelf. front of the rear wheelarches and parts of each footwell. There were other small patches that needed replaving that have now been done. RHD Conversion completed. There was accident damage to the front apron and rear valance. the rear valance has been repaired. whilst the front ‘spectacles' and apron need replacing. These have been removed. and new parts await fitting.   Some pictures of the tub

Panels;
Bonnet. rust free. recently top edge cracks (normal ones) repaired by CTM engineering and reinforcing added to prevent recurrence. Ready for paint.

Boot. rust free. straight. all dents removed. Ready for paint. Boot frame needs a gentle blast to remove surface rust.

Front Wings; LHS. lower edge replaced where overlies sill. front lower tip replaced with good metal finish repairs. Some small dents to dolly out or fill.  RHS. lower edge where overlies sill needs replacing. patch panel available. otherwise very good.

Rear wings; Both sides edges which lie over sills need minor repairs. RHS has dents + holes from American slap hammer work which need fixing. not difficult.

Doors; Both rust free. RHS ready for paint unless mirror holes need moving.  LHS minor metal finishing on skin near hinge end needed plus / minus mirror holes.

Surrey top; Aluminium / steel surrey top. Rear aluminium section currently painted red. window in situ. Steel top in primer. ready for paint.

Chassis;   This arrived from the USA cracked just behind the T Shirt pressing. In order to repair it correctly it was taken to CTM engineering for replacement of all damaged parts. rejigging and strengthening in the known areas of weakness (Diff mounting brackets. front suspension etc. ). It has been blasted and primed and is now ready for paint.

  Running gear;   This was removed systematically. cleaned. bead blasted and painted. ready for refitting where parts do not need replacement due to wear. It will need all usual consumables.
Drivetrain;
Engine. Disassembled with several hundred pictures to show sequence. All parts have been bagged and labelled as usual. Major parts cleaned and in good condition to eye. No apparent cracking / damage to head. crank. block etc. Professionally refurbished (Andrew Turner) carbs ready to fit. Inlet manifold present and correct. exhaust manifold needs replacing as does exhaust.
Gearbox. Stripped. rebuilt and converted to overdrive by TR Enterprises (no OD  originally fitted). Ready to fit.   Diff. Had cracked casing (presumably from same thing which cracked chassis). Sent to TR Enterprises for replacement of casing and full refurbishment. Ready to fit.   Driveshafts. Re-engineered by TR Enterprises. Ready to fit. Cost of Gearbox. diff and driveshaft work. £3. 00.

Interior;   This was in a state having been left in the Arizona sun for several years. There is essentially nothing left of the ‘soft' parts and will need replacing. 2 standard TR4a seats AND 2 American seats (with integral headrests) present. All will need re-covering. 2 full sets of correct instruments. Original set reasonable. replacement set in absolutely fantastic condition. Correct period radio in concours condition present (acquired separately).     5 steel wheels in good condition.

All documentation for above is available. and all the pictures of the disassembly will be provided with the car.  Currently it is in Southampton as a tub on chassis on axle stands. The car will fit in a long wheel base Luton type van for transport.   If you have any questions at all about the project. please get in touch.   More photos are available at     http://s21. photobucket. com/user/chrisgrainge/library/

Hi Chris, I was wondering if you still have the surrey top for the TR4? I know its a long shot but I'm trying to find one for my car. The red one in the description looks great, and its not a replica. If you have it, or know of anyone who has, please contact me. Cheers
