These Alfa Romeo Spiders are incredible values. The pricing has held for the past few years and recently started to creep upward. With their wonderful sounding 2-liter double overhead cam engine and mechanical (SPICA) fuel injection. they are a joy to drive. These are the last year of the stainless steel bumpers before U. S. DOT laws caused the addition of the big rubber ones. The key to these cars is finding a dry and straight example that is turnkey and ready to use. It is a lot more fun to drive your investment than restore it. This Alfa was built in July of 1974. The original owner took delivery on March 17th. 1976 from Park Avenue Motors. Inc of Palo Alto. California. This first owner was a Mr. Graham who was a class of ‘64 Stanford graduate. In 1976. he walked into the local Alfa Romeo dealer and bought this car off the showroom floor. He used it locally for the next 40+ years. He didn't commute far and as a result. he only put about 80k-miles on the car. For the first 10-years. most of the service was done at the Alfa dealer where he purchased it. There are corresponding receipts and stamps in the service booklet. Local area independent Alfa Romeo specialists performed the rest of the work. We have well over 100-pages of service receipts/records included with the car. Highlights of significant work performed as well as recent services include: New battery Reupholster front seats in correct Alfa vinyl New Michelin tires Major service including spark plugs. wires. cap. rotor. points. air filter (300-miles ago) New rear sway bar bushings Clutch slave and master cylinder (900-miles ago) New water pump. fan. and thermostat (1k-miles ago) Replace motor mounts. brake hoses. and service injection pump (3k-miles ago) Rebuild injection pump (4k-miles ago) Replaced all shocks (12k-miles ago) Rebuilt transmission/replaced clutch (15k-miles ago) Replaced exhaust system and universal joints (35k-miles ago) Replace head gaskets/headwork at dealer (60k-miles ago) It also appears that the car went in for regular oil/fluid services and new filters on an annual basis as well as major services every 5-years for the first 3-decades. This Alfa was very well maintained throughout its life. Similar to the mechanical condition. it is clear that this Spider was never abused and always garaged. It has never been hit or bumped and the paint is original (verified with a paint meter). The car still wears the original door guards and trunk vinyl pin striping installed by the selling dealership when new. As you can imagine with 44-year old original paint. there are some minor blemishes here and there (see pics). However. overall. the exterior is in remarkable condition. The body gaps are excellent as the car has never been apart. All the glass is original including the windshield. The original factory Campagnola Turbina wheels are in good condition with some light curb rashes and are wearing new Michelin tires. The soft top was replaced in the 80's and has a small tear on the rear plastic window that has been patched. The rest of the canvas top is in great shape with no tears or rips. It just has some fading. The interior is in equally nice survivor condition. The seats are new and have minimal signs of use. The original door panels. carpet. and factory rubber mats are in very good condition. The dash is original and has some cracks. A nice fitting plastic form-fitted cover is included with the car. The soft-top headliner is in decent shape. however shows some discoloration. The rear plastic window is very clear and easy to see out of. All the gauges operate properly as do the exterior and interior lights (except the license plate lights). The radio is an older unit installed in the 80's. It powers up. but doesn't play. This Spider is a joy to drive. It starts easily with the help of a recently installed cold-start actuator lever under the steering column. The manual actuator replaces the Achilles heel of the SPICA system – the thermostatic actuator – with a more reliable system for cold starts. The engine is smooth and it has excellent power. The gearbox feels solid and shifts easily through all the forward gears with no slipping or grinding. Braking is excellent and the steering is very responsive. These are fun and very well-balanced vintage sports cars. This would make a great weekend toy or something for longer vintage tours like the upcoming Targa California in June. Here is a video from the last event: watch?v=iqC1UDPwbQw California registration is good through March of 2018. This Alfa comes with the original owner's manuals. all service records from new. original service booklet with stamps. extra keys. both original CA blue license plates. original tonneau cover. and extra dash cover.
