1971 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super Biscione

Up for sale is a 1971 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super Biscione. A Dutch car since new until I purchased and imported the car to Virginia in 2012. The car has been used in nice weather for weekend drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway and runs through the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

If you like meeting new people. you probably should buy this car. It you like spending 15 minutes in the grocery or hardware store parking lot talking about your car then this Alfa is just for you.   The “cute factor” is off the scale which usually means every red-light and retail store parking lot finds you having a conversation with complete strangers about Her.

The previous Dutch owner had the car for 20 years. purchasing it when she was only 19 years old. The car was driven regularly in The Netherlands until it finally succumbed to the tin worm and failed the rigorous Dutch annual inspection. In 1998 the car was taken off the road and a complete restoration was begun in 2000. After 6 years. Jules returned to service and was driven again but only on nice days to preserve the no expenses spared restoration. The restoration included new rockers. new front wings. complete glass-out respray in the original Verde Muschio. new seating upholstery and new headliner. an upgraded 1750cc engine. loads of NOS chrome and stainless parts. and service to the transmission.  

The premium appointments that accompany the Biscione are all here including the black band headliner. faux wood steering wheel. C-pillar badges. full carpets. and all the extra stainless steel trim bits that are the hallmarks of a Biscione.

Here's a review of the vehicle in detail:

ACCESSORIES all work perfectly on the car including the headlights. turn-signals. brake-lights. oil pressure. water temperature. speedometer. odometer. wipers. heater fan. horn. cabin lights. gage lights. license plate lights. etc.

BODY. rockers. and passenger area floors and trunk are completely solid. The body has been completely restored from 2000 – 2006. the exterior has been repainted in the original Verde Muschio and block sanded for a mirror finish. Chrome and stainless steel trim are very nice including bumpers. side spears. hood spear. rain channels. badges. etc.

DRIVETRAIN The 1600cc engine has been replaced with a freshened 1750cc motor. a frequent upgrade to the Super that brings a bit more power and torque to the sport sedan. The engine is fed by two twin-choke Dell'Orto side draft carburetors professionally tuned for the 1750.   The 5-speed transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears. no second gear problems. Brakes are the standard 4-wheel ATE disc type with power assist and bring Jules to a quick and straight stop. The hydraulic clutch has absolutely no slip.  The motor has no oil or coolant leaks. the transmission has an occasional oil drip from the rear. and the differential has an occasional oil drip as well. The battery and charging system are both in tip-top condition.

INTERIOR has been refreshed including new burgundy seating surfaces that match the original door panels. new Biscione headliner with black band. NOS Biscione steering wheel. new carpets in the cabin and in the trunk. etc. In other words. the interior is like new.

The car has been fitted with nice upgrades that make the Super more enjoyable. sporty. and reliable:

·         Alfaholics aluminum carb mounts with Misab plates and Cosworth buffers

·         Slightly lowered suspension

·         Alfaholics GTA replica wheels in 14"

·         Fresh Pirelli P6 185/65 14 tires

·         123-ignition system with Bosch blue coil

·         Bilstein shock absorbers at the front. Koni red at the rear

·         Recent Dinitrol preventive anti-rust treatment that includes undercoating and wax injection to body panels and rockers.

·         Loads of NOS parts used in the restoration including new bumpers. new headlight surrounds. new indicator lights etc

·         Sony radio with CD and MP3 player

The car has been maintained for the last 20 years regardless of cost and comes with 2 inches of receipts. records. photos of the restoration. tax records. registration records. and event entry forms. Additionally included (and rarely found) is the original jack and tool kit for the Biscione.

Everyone asks me about parts availability. Many of the parts are the same as the GTV and Spider and are readily available from major US Alfa parts suppliers. Special Sedan parts are easily available in Europe from major European suppliers.  

In summary. what you get is a great driving car that looks fantastic. is loads of fun. can carry 5 people although the rear leg room is a bit tight. and will get more attention than any Ferrari or Lambo at Cars and Coffee.

There are a few things left for the next caretaker to improve on. The tachometer is a bit overenthusiastic. the heat does not work (fan does). it could benefit from a longer rear axle gear to take advantage of the additional torque and horsepower of the 1750. and there are probably countless other small details that make tinkering with a classic Alfa Romeo so enjoyable.
