This 1959 MGA Twin Cam YD1 906 (RHD) was discovered in 1983 at Geoff Mansfield's Northern TR Centre in Tyne & Wear. UK. more noted for his interest in Triumph sports cars. Some early restoration work had been undertaken on the body but then abandoned. Having purchased the vehicle it was delivered (1983) to Simon Robinson. well know MGA restorer in Darlington. to mount on their chassis and body jigs and they completed the restoration of body panels and chassis and primed painted the vehicle. As with many restoration projects other priorities took over and the vehicle remained in this state for 10 years or more. although restoration of smaller components continued when time permitted. The search for missing components was always on-going and this was somewhat simplified as a good friend Bob McElroy. and then owner of the MGA Twin Cam Le Mans car SRX 210. had amassed a large quantity of spares when the MGA distributors sold off their Twin Cam inventory. Bob was also responsible for rebuilding the engine using some NOS items to 8. 3 comp/ratio specification. The car was painted its original Orient Red in 1987 and a new aluminium bonnet was wheeled and fitted. A move to the USA was underway and Bob West. at Pontefract. fitted the engine and 5 speed gearbox. made and fitted the cockpit trim. covered the deluxe (competition) seats in black (original were red) leather. made new hood and tonneau cover. and then the rolling body/chassis was delivered to the shippers in this condition. It was rolled out of its container in California in 2002 never having turned a "powered" wheel in its semi restored state in the UK. The restoration was completed and vehicle registered in California in 2009.
Specification :- The matching number Twin Cam engine 16G/U/571 is now running with Weber carbs. mounted on a replica of the Le Mans inlet manifold. Bob and I manufactured 20 units. 19 of which were sold to members of the Twin Cam Group.  It is fitted with a lightened flywheel and diaphragm clutch.  Mated to a Hi-Gear Engineering 5 speed Type 9 gearbox conversion and is an absolute delight to use and transforms the driving pleasure.  An additional switch is dashboard mounted to control the Spal electric radiator fan.  The original Smiths heater is working as are the 2 speed Lucas wipers.  Twin Lucas spot lights are fitted on the correct mounting brackets.  An oil cooler is mounted on the front panel with the correct solid and flexible piping.  Jim Alcorn supplied a set of 4 off 51/2J rims and new Pirelli Cinturatos are fitted. The spare is not a wide rim as such will not fit in the spare wheel space. (A new tyre is required on the spare wheel). The knock on/off wheel spinners are new and correct Twin Cam specification.  The petrol. gas tank was new at the time of the body rebuild and the original Lucas fuel pump is fitted.  A single 12V battery is fitted on the passenger side and a tool box is located in the other battery cradle. A battery cut out switch is located at the rear of the tunnel between the seats.  The electrics have been converted to negative earth and an alternator is fitted. A period Motorola radio is fitted but not currently wired up. Chassis is powder coated. rust free and the car at all times garaged.
