Here for your consideration is my 2011 BMW 335d 4 Door Sport Sedan loaded with just about every option that was available from BMW at the time. The attached clean Carfax shows one owner. and no accidents. We bought the car new from our local BMW dealership where my wife just recently bought another new BMW. and my wife and I have been the only owners and drivers. The car is in excellent condition. we have all the original owner's manuals and original BMW provided documentation as well as all service records. and the car has always been serviced only by our local BMW dealership.

I guess I have always been a bit of a high performance enthusiast. and over the years have become a big fan of diesel technology having owned several diesel powered vehicles. So when I first read the road test reports after BMW launched the 335d high performance twin turbo diesel sport sedan. I knew I would need to take a close look at these cars. A few months later once my wife and I had taken our first test drive in one of these cars. we both agreed. this was just the car we wanted for our weekend drives.

For those that have never driven in these cars. trust me. this is not your father's sooty old diesel car! I recall when owning a diesel car meant you could just about time your acceleration to highway speeds with an hour glass. and you could hear the clatter of the diesel engine from a hundred yards away. and see the black smoke from even farther. But in test reports these cars were reported to go from 0-60 in about 5 seconds. it is so quiet no one ever even knows it is a diesel. and these clean diesel engines emit virtually no soot at all. Incidentally given the emissions are so low. it has been reported these cars are even more environmentally friendly than a Prius. due only to the higher environmental impact of the battery disposal from the Prius.

But since we often enjoy weekend drives in the country. we bought this car to enjoy driving it. and driving these cars with the power of these twin turbo direct injected clean diesel engines is just simply incredible. While they can accelerate and handle like many performance sports cars. they can also get an incredible 36 miles to the gallon at 70 MPH on the highway. BMW actually rated the engines at an overly conservative 265 BHP at 4200 RPMs and 425 Ft pounds of torque at the crankshaft at only 1700 RPMs. but there are many actual chassis dyno tests available to show that after allowing for 16% drive train loss sending the power through the Steptronic auto transmission to the wheels. the engines really produce closer to 300BHP and 500 Ft Pounds Torque at the crank. With that much torque on tap at only 1700 RPMs from a slow roll the cars move surprisingly quick considering they weigh about 3800 pounds. but at highway speeds where the weight/mass is already moving. the cars may be the ultimate “sleeper” since they can accelerate from 65 to far in excess of the legal speed limits in what seems like the blink of an eye. There are videos on Youtube of these cars cruising at the electronically governed top speed of 155 MPH on the Autobahn. and one video I recall seeing of a E90 335d like this one just pulling right away from a E92 M3 at highway speeds. The V8 in the M3 certainly has much more HP around 8. 00 RPMs. but that engine does not come anywhere close to the torque output of the E90 335d.

I am in my early sixties now and while I appreciate the comfort. style and performance offered in many comparable luxury sedans. what impressed me most was this car could provide all of that. and still offer such impressive fuel economy. We have never used the car for daily commuting. and only drove a total of 31. 00 miles over the last nearly 6 years since it was purchased. The car has a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric tires that have about 85% of their tread remaining and are still under warranty. the brake pads look to have about 80% remaining. and the brake rotors show almost no signs of wear. As one can see. the car has been driven gently by a middle aged couple. and properly cared for. Most of the miles are highway miles. as the car has been used on quite a number of short weekend trips. and we never really even planned to sell it. My wife just bought a new BMW SUV and I recently bought another sports car. so now that we  have 6 cars between the two of us. we simply can't justify keeping this car any longer. The car needs a new home. and I hope it will be enjoyed by the new owner as much as we have enjoyed owning it over the past 6 years.

If you are still reading this and seriously considering one of these cars. let me share what I learned when shopping for a BMW. First. the base model seats in almost all the BMWs are just not comfortable at all. while the sport seats are excellent. So. it you are anything like my wife and I and you actually plan to sit in the car while driving. you need to plan to get a car with at least the Sports Package upgrade. or possibly the M Sports Package depending on the model. By the way. BMW must be very proud of their upgrades. as they sure price them accordingly. so it starts to become a cost benefit analysis at this point.

Given the added cost of BMW options quickly drive up the price. with this car I tried to keep the cost under control when shopping for this car. But after a few test drives. I decided driving these cars with the M Sport suspension package was so much more enjoyable that it justified the added expense. and today I am still happy with that choice. even though that initial $3750. 00 cost adds very little residual value for resale purposes.

The $2650. 00 premium package upgrade is one that is difficult to quantify. until you drive cars both with and without the premium package. Again. for our purposes it made sense to incur this added cost for the added driving enjoyment. in spite of the fact that it adds nothing to the residual value now for resale purposes. The option for voice activated Navigation with real time traffic was something I seriously debated given the $2100. 00 added expense given there were so many less expensive solutions available. however I have found that given the Washington DC area traffic. there have been a number of times where I was able to use the voice commands to navigate around congestion while driving. rather than having to stop and try to key in commands to navigate. Of course with integrated Blue Tooth and so many features now available through our smart phones. there are many alternatives. but when driving this car. I still find myself using the BMW navigation.

I am attaching a photo of the original window sticker showing all the upgrades and options included on this car that brought the purchase price up from a base cost of $44. 50. 00 to $57. 00. 00 when it was purchased in 2011. While the resale values today do not reflect anywhere near the $13. 00. 00 in cost for options. I suspect these upgrades should make the car very desirable. as the new owners will still be able to appreciate these upgraded features for many years to come.
