VOLVO P1800E CLASSIC SWEDISH BEAUTY

Very Reluctant sale . I've owned this wonderful example of Swedish engineering for 6 years. if you're familiar with this model you'll know the story behind it's development and the story of the 70's British TV series ‘The Saint' which immortalised the Volvo P1800. This is an example of the fuel injected model the 1800e built in 1971 in Sweden. It has a 2litre four cylinder push rod engine – no cambelt. The car is a rear wheel drive about 120 horse power. No overheating.

Over the years it has had many new parts from Brooklands Volvo - ones that come to mind are –water pump. rear calipers. brake pipes. door scapers. fuel sensor gauge. rocker seal. door seals. accelerator pedal. Front twin piston calipers stripped and rebuilt with new dustcovers etc. Master cylinder stripped and cleaned with new seals. Heater maitrix removed and cleaned.   New gas shocks and springs all around. New polyurethane bushes. New coil. Recent alternator. radiator. etc.

It drives beautifully – by that I mean the engine pulls strongly the gears are smooth – overdrive works flawlessly – top speed over 105mph. No power steering ! Tyre type significantly effects steering on these cars  -fitted with tubeless Toyo which have less than 100 miles on them. I preferred to spend money on keeping the car in good mechanical order because I hugely enjoyed driving it. It's a real head turner especially for the boy racers ‘mate what IS that car!?'

Mechanically the car is absolutely sound. Original ignition system.

Whilst the car is mechanically sound the bodywork is where some money needs to be spent. There is some rust in a number of areas – drivers side headlight. rear wheel arch. around both rear and front windowscreen. bootlid. Other areas of rust have been cut out and welded – outriggers. bottom of wheel arch. floor pan. sill. Drivers side rear indicator cluster has been filled. There has been some inexpert body spraying on the doors and a few other areas – it needs a respray. It had been my intention to get a complete bare metal job done on the body. There is an indentation in the boot lid and the roof. Barely visible – will tap out. The drivers side wing has had the front section replaced at some point – there is evidence of filler.

The interior – front seats need re-upholstering. Rear seat is fine. The rev counter has been removed – it never worked and I had tried to fix it to no avail. There is a guy that does them for around £80 – I have two in fact. Other instruments work fine – fuel gauge a bit flaky though even though has had a new sender.   Regular oil and filter change. Starts second turn in summer.   Gearcase has synthetic 5/30 – the overdrive works smoother with this viscosity I found. Car comes with some history. Door cards have been removed and the carpets - they will come with the sale

Car is of course tax exempt. The car will be sold with 12months MOT . current MOT expires nov 2013. You will be able to drive it away. I will drive the car to anywhere in the UK or Europe for an agreed price.

There you have it – a car that has been regularly driven in good order which would be a straightforward restoration or you could r drive it. enjoy it and sell on - they're not making any more of these. Also comes with the Volvo manual – not to be confused with Haynes . no photos but wonderful drawings including several pull outs. Will also come with some new front indicator rims. Mileage is around 95k. You might not be aware that a P1800 holds the Guiness record for the most miles covered  - over 3 million!!
