1964 Ford Falcon Futura Appraisal (2010 KB)

General Description and Condition:

The Ford Falcon was introduced in 1960 as a small and economical compact family car to compete with the European imports. in particular the Volkswagen. that were beginning to take away market share from the normally much larger North American cars. The design was significantly revised in 1964 and became more angular and aggressive looking. The design of the car was conventional with a front mounted six cylinder or small V8 engine driving the rear wheels. A number of trim options were available and the car was available in hardtop. sedan. station wagon and convertible styles. For a period the truck like Ranchero was based on the Falcon frame.

This car is a 1964 Ford Falcon Futura Convertible. It is an older extensive restoration that now shows only minor aging and wear from normal use. The replacement engine runs fine. The car is overall in above average # 2 condition.  Considering the mechanical and exterior / interior condition of the vehicle. and information provided by the owner. the odometer indication of 54. 70 miles likely reflects the actual distance the vehicle has seen.

Body and Trim and Glass:

The body panels on this two door convertible are straight and free of accident damage or corrosion. All panels are properly aligned with reasonable and uniform panel gaps and no pinch points. There is some evidence of prior body work and some minor patches of body filler on lower panels on both sides of the car. All trim and brightwork is intact and in good to very good condition. Some original chrome such as the mirror chrome shows minor pitting due to age. The front and rear bumpers are straight and free of accident damage or scrapes and the chrome finish is good as both bumpers appear to be original with some faded chrome and minor rust stains noted. The owner indicated that all lights are operational and there are no cracks or scratches in the headlights or tail lights. There are no scratches in the side glass from raising and lowering the windows. The windows crank up and down easily without binding. The rear back light and windshield are free of cracks or chips but the front windshield does show some minor pitting from road grit. The trunk area is clean with the mat showing minimal aging and wear. The trunk floor is free of corrosion. The hood and trunk decks as well as both doors; open and close easily without binding or sagging. The rubber door and trunk seals show minimal aging and wear. The car does have a white convertible top that looks original and shows some aging with some faded colour. dark stains and minor rub marks.

Paint:

The car has been repainted the original white colour with red side stripes. Quality of the prep work is good with no sanding marks but there is some overspray on trim or rubber seals. The colour has good shine and lustre and the finish has minimal dust or orange peel in the surface. The paint is older however and has accumulated a few minor marks and paint chips on leading panels from normal wear and tear and road grit.

Wheels and Tires:

The Falcon has the original steel painted wheels on all four corners. These show no significant corrosion and are dressed up with full sized deluxe chromed spoked wheel discs. The wheel discs could be polished and show some fading and some have some minor scratches from curb damage. The wheels hold newer Weathermax All Season radials that are 175 70R13 in size. The tread depth was not measured but it is estimated that about 80 % of the original tread remains. An older slightly used Uniroyal radial was mounted on an original steel rim. in the trunk.

Interior and Instruments:

This smaller sized car seats four with front and rear bench seats and no centre floor console. Door sill plates are newer and show typical minor scuffing but very little fading. The aftermarket kick panels show no cracks in the plastic. The red carpet has carpeted throw mats to protect the floor covering. which shows minimal aging or wear. The door panels appear original and are free of cracks or holes in the vinyl cover or arm rests but there are some small tears low on the driver's side panel; probably due to seat belt hardware damage. Newer seat belts have been installed with the front and rear seats. Front seats have been refinished and show no fading. cracks. tears or split seams in the red vinyl. The rear bench seat is in excellent condition with no aging or wear apparent. The convertible frame is in very good condition with wear or damage noted. There does not appear to be any sun / heat damage to the dash pad and no aging. cracks or holes are apparent. The instrument cluster and steering column are original and have not been modified. The steering wheel is original and free of cracks or hand-wear on the rim although there is some pitting on the horn ring and some other interior hardware. The car is nicely equipped with driver's convenience options including dual chromed side view mirrors. a rear view mirror. heater / defroster. wipers / washer. ashtray and lighter with courtesy lights. The instrument cluster contains the factory installed speedometer. coolant temperature and fuel level gauges with warning lights. The car also has a power top.

Audio:

The vehicle has the original am pushbutton audio system mounted in the dash panel. A Bazooka sub-woofer is in the trunk along with a Sirius satellite receiver. No other aftermarket stereo enhancements were found at the time of the inspection.

Engine and Power Train:

The engine compartment on this vehicle has been kept reasonably clean and tidy. The front mounted 200 cubic inch inline six is a newer replacement for the original with some appearance enhancements in terms of a repainted block and factory air breather. There is some minor accumulated grime from gasket oil seepage on a few components but the engine appears to be well cared for with new looking plug wires and an upgraded alternator and electronic ignition from a newer vintage Ford. In addition. belts and hoses show minimal aging or wear. It starts easily and runs smoothly with no unusual noise or smoke that might indicate a hidden maintenance or mechanical problem. The induction system consists of the original 1v carburetor and cast iron intake manifold. No internal engine performance upgrades are noted. The cooling system is stock with a belt driven fan assisting a reconditioned radiator. There are no drops of oil on the underside pans and no indication of any significant fluid leaks. Power is fed through a stock three speed automatic transmission to the original rear end.

Suspension/Brakes:

The vehicle retains its original configuration for suspension and four wheel drum braking systems. The suspension is firm with no sagging. No modifications were found and  components were being reconditioned as needed. The owner has invoices to show that the braking system has recently been reconditioned. These critical systems appear to be in good working condition with no apparent problems. This summary is not a safety inspection and this report is not a qualification of the mechanical integrity of the components. but is only reporting on the visual state of what is present.

Frame/Exhaust:

The frame and undercarriage have been cleaned and undercoated for protection. There is no indication of any road hazard damage on underside panels but there is some isolated rust stains in seams and crevices and areas where the paint or undercoat is thin or has become loose. Some rust was also noted in the passenger side bottom of the front wheel well liner. but this had been recoated in undercoating to prevent further damage. The exhaust system is newer and unmodified with a factory cast iron manifold. single downpipe and muffler. There is no indication of any leaks in the system and when the engine is idling the exhaust sound is normal.
