1966 Sunbeam Tiger
Completely and Carefully Restored

We are pleased to offer the best Sunbeam Tiger we have ever had available. It was recently listed on the Norman Tiger Registry. The story of these factory hot rods is better stated and well documented elsewhere. so I will confine my description to the fact only 7. 85 factory V-8 powered built cars were produced and lot either rusted away or were destroyed in accidents. This particular 1966 Tiger lived in the Northwest salt free climate. It has received a high quality top to bottom restoration with all components rebuilt. This very solid rust free car came out of long term storage was stripped to the last nut and bolt then comprehensively restored by a caring owner. He refinished it carefully. and kept it in its original factory produced colors. We have a box of pictures. records and info going back 30+yrs. The car is definitely collector quality and is the nicest driving Sunbeam Tiger I have had the pleasure to drive.

Body and Paint:

The body is a strong point on this car. and it retains the original spot welds most everywhere inspected. This includes the rockers panels and rear wheel arches. Body gaps are excellent and at least as good as factory. No signs of rust or rust repair. The paint is the original color and well applied everywhere including all jambs. the underside of hood and trunk and both luggage compartment and engine bay. It is smooth. shiny and has only the minor rock chip flaws from low miles of road use. The chrome and stainless has been redone including vent windows. door handles and bumpers. All rubber gaskets and seals were replaced in course of assembly.

Mechanicals:

The engine is a mildly built 289 that is equipped with a Holley 4bbl that retains the stock air cleaner. The engine also has nicely fitted tube headers. This is not a wild hot rod motor that would over power the brakes and chassis. It starts easily. settles to a smooth idle and delivers smooth and linear power all the way to redline. The exhaust is the perfect combination of tone and loudness. is tucked in nicely and duplicates the original routing and mountings with just slightly larger pipes. The clutch is smooth and manageable and the Ford 4 speed top loader has the original Tiger shift linkage and shifts nicely. The original differential must still have the tall gearing as it loafs on the freeway yet is capable of nearly 60 mph in first gear as the factory planned. The rear end housing been located with factory looking traction bars and the car is fitted with expensive orange Koni classic shocks front and rear. The adjustable Koni shocks and the fully rebuilt suspension give the car a firm. but not harsh ride while enhancing the handling. Overall a well-balanced car with nice power assisted brakes and competent suspension.

Interior:

The entire interior has been correctly done in original colors and materials and is very well fitted. The walnut dash panel was refinished as original and is stunning to look at. The seats are comfortable and everything looks factory correct. There is a black soft top under the metal boot cover and it fits well. The metal factory hardtop was also fully restored in a complimentary black with new white headliner. All glass is in great condition.

Wheels and Tires:

The car has a great stance since the wheels have been upgraded from the 13 inch stock steel type to a set of 15 inch Panasports. Tires are 195/55ZR BF Goodrich Comp TA's on front and a pair of 205/50ZR comp TA's on the rear for better balance. The larger wheels fill the wheel wells properly yet retain plenty of clearance. The spare is a stock steel wheel with a Goodyear 78 series bias ply tire. The original jack is in the trunk along with a more usable scissor jack.

Driving Impressions

This Sunbeam Tiger is well powered. but not to excess. It starts and idles well. and freely revs when asked. The chassis is tight and tracks straight. the smooth power delivery makes it a delight to drive. The clutch is easy to operate and the steering is still light even with the wider tires fitted. The brakes are very good and power assisted still. Cruising speed on the freeway is relaxed with the power to pass anything under your right foot. This car makes you want to drive it.

Summation

If you are looking for an above average Sunbeam Tiger that will be a pleasure to drive and a rarity at shows. this is one example you should not miss. Well restored Tigers are being discovered by collectors and are getting harder to find. They will be taking their proper place on the collector list and be closer in value to Austin Healeys and E-type Jaguars soon. If any questions please feel free to call Bob at 541-543-6791
