This Morris 8 is a great example of an original inter war British economy car. So exactly what is a “Morris 8”?

Morris cars evolved before WW I. In 1924 the first Morris Minor was introduced. About that time a dealer called Morris Garages began installing sports car bodies on Minors and calling them “MG”. Therefore the lineage is clear – an MG was a Minor for racing.

In 1934 the Minor was redesigned and renamed the “8” after the “taxable” horsepower – not to be confused with the actual engine power. In 1948 after another redesign; the original Minor name was restored creating one of the most popular cult cars of the ‘50s and 60s. This car is actually a Minor with attractive pre war British styling and accoutrements.

The car appears to have been restored nicely. The paint and upholstery are in fine shape with the normal expected minor road rash and footprints. It has a 4 speed transmission and runs strong.  The charging system is inoperative although the generator looks to have been rebuilt during the restoration.

The brakes are fresh from the linings to the master cylinder which has been upgraded to a cast iron unit; replacing the fragile little “coffee can” style. All new lines. hoses. and wheel cylinders are installed with US standard hydraulic fittings replacing the original and difficult to replace Whitworth and British Standard Pipe. It now uses DOT 5 fluid that does not attract moisture and degrade the metal parts in the system. Although the master cylinder was replaced like-for-like with a one inch bore; it takes considerable effort on the pedal. The Lockheed style brakes are not self energizing. A slightly smaller bore master cylinder might be appropriate.

The front end was aligned and steering system adjusted as needed. the carburetor cleaned and all lubricants were changed. The tires are in good shape. A blown head gasket was replaced. the head milled flat. and the valves lapped and adjusted.

You won't worry about being the first on the block to get one – yours will be the ONLY one on the block. If you enjoy unique and interesting vehicles and want to show off your “green” pedigree to the neighbors; this lovely Minor in disguise is for you!
