2005 Toyota XRS 2ZZ-GE VVTL-i The ZZ series uses a die-cast aluminum engine block press-fit cast iron cylinder liners. and aluminum DOHC 4-valve cylinder heads. a first for Toyota. [1] The camshafts are chain-driven. The 2ZZ "square" design optimized for high-RPM power. The 2ZZ-GE is a 1. 8 L version built in Japan. It uses MFI fuel injection. has VVTL-i. and features forged steel connecting rods. Compression ratio is 11. 5:1
Unique to the ZZ family. the 2ZZ-GE utilizes a dual camshaft profile system (the "L" in VVTL-i. known by enthusiasts and engineers alike as "lift" similar to Hondas VTEC) to produce the added power w/o an increase in displacement or forced induction.
The 2ZZ-GE was the first production engine to combine cam-phasing variable valve timing with dual-profile variable valve timing in the American market. The whole exercise is accompanied by a symphony of phase shifts. First. there's a cam-timing shift somewhere in the mid-range that has the exhaust tone abruptly open-up in character and then the big cam-profile switchover that really wakes it up.  
The 2ZZ is the only model in the ZZ engine family to use a 6-speed manual tranny. These gearboxes were unique to this engine.
Toyota commissioned Yamaha to design the 2ZZ-GE. for high-RPM operation and producing a power peak near the top of the RPM range. The high-output cam profile is not activated until approx. 6. 00 rpm. The Toyota PCM electronically limits RPM to about 8200 RPM.
The high pressure cast aluminum alloy engine block had Metal Matrix Reinforced (MMC) cylinder walls. MMC is a reinforcement material composed of ceramic parts and fibers.

The close ratio C60 6-speed manual transmission was the only transmission available for the 05 & 06 XRS.
Sport-tuned suspension lowered the Corolla XRS by 0. 5 in. and gave it superior handling.
A Yamaha designed brace spans the front strut towers as well as a X-Brace for the rear towers.
The power steering system is unique to the XRS and provides sports car like handling whereas you can feel your environment. giving you turn by turn road experience unlike a typical passenger car. the steering is superior putting you in-charge.  
The four-wheel disc brakes and ABS system was upgraded to a four-channel with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) allowing you to go from 70 mph to 0 in 176 feet.  Toyota chassis factory modifications include: Higher-rate shocks and springs. a stiffened steering column. a half-inch-lower ride height. 16 inch wheels and tires and TRD strut tower rod bridging lends to the XRS front end a confident sense of solidity. The XRS interior trim includes: Sport seats. silver instruments and switch plates. a leather shift knob and electro-luminescent gauges. The exterior has specific badging and color-keyed rear spoiler.
Although the XRS is outfitted as a high performance sports car it's ride and fuel efficiency are surprisingly good. achieving an MPG of 26 city / 34 hwy.    
The XRS limited production resulted in a unique sleeper with outright performance designed by Toyota and used by Lotus!

Car has been very well maintained receiving 3000 mile oil changes and all maintenance required by Toyota. Car is "very" clean inside and out and the motor looks nearly like new. Motor mounts replaced Jan. 2017 Car runs and drives beautifully. has a strong motor and handles very well.
