Well if I had money. Tell you what I'd do. I'd go downtown and buy a Mercury or two. Crazy 'bout a Mercury. Ah Yes. this "Oldie but Goodie" 50's Custom is a rare sight indeed. when it comes to "Old School Kool" style the Mercury marquee has captured the hearts of countless generations of hot rodder's. song writer's and enthusiast's alike. Truly an American Automotive Icon in many ways.

The Mercury brand actually began its historic journey with Ford's realization that they had nothing in the mid-priced field between the Ford and Lincoln Zephyr lines. As the Great Depression was beginning to ease. Ford wanted a piece of the action that Chrysler and General Motors had already captured. Henry Ford's son Edsel wanted to create a "Super Deluxe Ford" rather than a separate model. whereas. early 1st year production 1939 models carried Ford-Mercury hub caps. shortly thereafter designated as the Mercury product line. (Ford later produced a "Super Deluxe" model in 1941). Early Mercury's looked much like early Fords but did you know that they did not share a single exterior body panel. The Mercury "Eight" was a little bigger. more powerful and better trimmed than the Ford Deluxe model.

Which brings us to this wonderfully solid 2nd year specimen. known as a Generation 1 Mercury "Eight". one of only 9. 12 Club Convertibles produced for 1940. A true "50's Style Custom" survivor with a well preserved. rock solid and virtually unmolested "All Steel" original body/chassis & folding top. Doo-Wop and Rock & Roll. pull up a chair and crank up the oldies as I cover the appointments of this slick beauty. It's one for the Money. Two for the Show. Three to Get Ready. Now Go. Cat Go.

This Black Beauty offers whistle straight lines. plenty of reflections and tasteful 50's era style. Sporting sweet factory trim. all steel body and original folding top. A prior ISCA Class Champion. a thorough and well preserved body off restoration (1998 after 20yrs of storage). Completely disassembled. stripped to bare metal. epoxy coated and professionally refinished with high quality "PPG" Deltron Black basecoat/clear coat. stunning NOS grill redone in show chrome. excellent chrome bumpers and many NOS trim items including: headlight bezels. tail-lights. door/trunk handles. running boards. steel fender skirts and Appleton dummy spotlights. show chrome Cadillac Sombrero hub caps. The white folding top was originally installed in the 60's with some patina. Just Right.

Resting on it's excellent "Original Vin Correct" stock non-split bone chassis. 4" dropped front axle. lowered rear spring/suspension. tube shocks and BF Goodrich (Coker) 15' wide white radials. The power train components remain stock with rebuilt FlatHead V8. 3 Speed Column Shift Trans and rare Columbia 2 speed vacuum shift rear axle with operation manuals. Other noted items include dual exhaust w/steel glass packs & chrome tips. original 6 volt system. all new cloth wiring. under hood highly detailed. old school pin striping w/flying eyeball and not much more :) Again. Just Right.

Now its time to hop into a tricked out Old School interior stitched by well known thread-master Gary Benway. AKA the "The Mad Pleater". real Rolled & Pleated pearl white over dark blue. custom matching pearl white top boot. original dash w/column shift. working original factory instruments. old school pin-striping. NOS plastic inserts. glove box insert and that's it :).

In closing. drop top Old Merc's of this era are getting hard to find. especially this absolutely solid. well preserved. unmolested and tastefully adorned convertible. Time-Warp Fun.

Equipment   Known Facts

Free and Clear Private Party Titled in Washington State. Petted and Protected. A 14 year young body off restoration of professional quality. under 10k miles since completion (odo 9. 50 at time of inspection). Runs and drives great. although the transmission was rebuilt during restoration. very drivable but it will pop out of 2nd gear during "acceleration" unless the column shifter is held in position (opinion: could be linkage or forward syncro ring). The convertible top installed in the 60's is fully functional with only light patina and does a small tear near the side LF snap. This is a VERY NICE and exceptionally SOLID survivor. No Excuses!
