1965 BMW 700 LS Luxus.   This is the car that saved BMW from bankruptcy in the early 60's. The previously offered. well-engineered and endearing Isetta "bubble car" in the 1950's was never a hit in the growing U. S. market and Vienna's Wolfgang Denzel. working with Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti created a more traditional body style using the Isetta's mechanicals. well proven over years of improvements. The BMW 700 became popular with families after the war years who wanted seating for four and conventional doors and bodywork.

This example. located in Vienna. has experienced an older restoration and there is zero rust. fine mechanicals and all the accessories work. heater. lights. radio. mechanical fuel gauge. speedo and even the VDO clock and back up light! The two cylinder boxer motor is quaint. fun to run and is quite fast for all 700 cc's. I have had five adults in the car (once) in the Austrian Alps and it ran fine without overheating. though I don't recommend five adults if you want to run at autobahn speeds. She will run with two adults at 100 kph no worries and the heater pushes hot. in both defrost and floor vents. With the rear engine she is a blast through the twisties and if you squint your eyes you can imagine being Hans Stuck. who won the German Mountain Championship in a 700 Coupé with around 60HP in 1960. and many others racing legends such as the BMW engine developer Alexander von Falkenhausen or the then racing novices Hubert Hahne. Sepp Greger. Jacky Ickx and the later BMW motor racing director Jochen Neerpasch cut their teeth on these tough little BMWs.

To make her perfect she needs a respray as the paint. though ok. is not perfect. The driver's door needs adjustment as it does not fully close tight. Windshield is a bit scratched from previous owner not changing wiper blades in time. The engine runs like a champ - typical BMW boxer 1960s engineering. The transmission shifts well. though first gear synchro is a bit worn - I can keep it from grinding but a novice needs help in understanding how and I am happy to instruct. She starts up first spin and never complains. The rear springs could use a refresh and the steering. though lithe and tight. has a little bump steer in potholes - probably a rubber bushing needing renewal. Tires are brand new radials and she corners like a bobsled.

If perfect she fetches 20. 00 - 25. 00 USD easily. Right now I am letting her go for much less. With a couple grand in further restoration she will make you a nice profit or an even greater Sunday driver though I would take her anywhere now with confidence. I'd also put seat belts in. just in case. as she is original through and through.

I am selling to liquidate assets only - I don't want her to go. Clear title. Austrian "pickerel" registration good through 2014. ready to run up and down mountain passes and everyone stares wherever I roam. Wish I could keep her and you will not be disappointed. She also comes with two motors and two transmissions - extra parts from the previous owner who is a BMW nut. Plenty of spares though you need none for fun now.

Here she is on the streets of Vienna. enjoying the sights. (find on youtube. com and search for jnwtFcxdGB8)
