TOYOTA MR2 SW20   November  1990 Build
My son and me picked this up on a whim as a project car a couple of years back. It was a non-starting car and we bought it thinking it might have been a candidate for an engine swap but we soon discovered all that was wrong with it was a slipped timing belt.  It had no log books or service records so we decided to do the usual 150K Mr2 recommended overhaul and remove and replace and service a lot of other stuff at the same time. It spent 3 months at the mechanics while we sourced new parts from Japan and USA. See the list below of what was replaced  and serviced. All genuine Toyota parts were used where available. It drives very well and feels more lively and hunkered down than the 1996 Bathurst version we own. A real joy to drive with a TRD new short shifter and well matched custom white Enkei rims running brand new Toyo Proxes. Since the overhaul 2 years ago we've driven it once along the old Pac to Gosford  and back and then a couple of times around the block here so its probably done less than 100 km in 2 years.  It beckons to be driven but just sits at the back of the garage costing insurance and rego because we just don't ever seem to get the time to drive it.  The car turns heads and people ask what it is and say how nice it looks. But it's a bit rough around the edges many cosmetic defects that can be diy fix ups if you are handy but might benefit from some professional help: someone has shoved their knee into the panel near the petrol cap. someone has keyed a figure 8 on the front bonnet. someone has jacked the car on its sill near the back wheel and crushed the seam. one or two of the underbody covers is missing. there are pulled threads on the seats. left hand mirror not working. ripple on the centre console. speakers not all working . tacho was working now it has stopped (might need a new capacitor - a common issue with them) . some high build masked touch ups on the paintwork on the T-bar. right fender and rear bumper need to be sanded back to level. resprayed and feathered in.  Paint has worn off on the edges of the engine cover and bonnet so that will need some attention before it turns into a rust problem. There is surface rust appearing on those edges and I stress it is just surface rust that could almost be wiped off with your finger. It was our plan to respray the bonnet but not immediately necessary.  The removable steel heat shield in the engine bay has some corrosion and will need to be taken out and resprayed. someone has sprayed silver paint on the air manifold. the air con needs reconnection and has a burnt electrical connector near the late model mr2 compressor which was actually missing when we bought the car. Rego expires 24th April and a pink certificate will be provided - we have not yet received the renewal papers so will wait till then. Currently insured comprehensively with NRMA veteran and vintage classic car insurance at $150/ year and In 4 years time it will qualify for low cost RMS veteran rego so for those wanting to use it as a hobby car it will have very low holding costs in the not too distant futureNo dreamers please.  Open to negotiation but if you are planning on taking a look or and plan on screwing us around on price don't waste your time or ours. We'd rather keep it than give it away. The car is not perfect and needs some cosmetic attention but it has undergone a comprehensive mechanical overhaul which you wont find on many Mr2's.  We've done the hard work. thrown in the best wheels and rubber you can possibly buy and spent lots of cash bringing its servicing up to date so it can be thoroughly enjoyed now with confidence. New Enkei rims - lightweight rims to lower centre of gravity. perfect offsets - these alone are worth $2000Original wheels and tyres also come with the car. New Toyo Proxes all round - cost around $800Genuine Toyota head unit to stereo - (from a Prado I think)All cylinders were compression tested by our mechanic before he started work on the car as he wanted to make sure the engine was Ok before he started the mechanical overhaul . I wished I'd asked him for the results but he assured me they were all showing good compression and I know he isnt the type of guy who would play down something like that. New Heavy duty batterySurface rust spots around T- Bar and on edges of some panels repaired but need tidying up as we put the undercoat on too thick and you can see the ridge on the paint.
