1971 MGBGT

If you are looking for an average GT to enjoy this summer. then I suggest you keep on looking. If however. you are seeking something rather special. look no further. Without doubt. the nicest MGB I have ever seen or driven has just arrived at Cranborne Classics and I am completely hooked. Substantially and properly restored around 6 years and the subject of more recent detailing. this stunning example in unmarked Flame Red with Black trim is just a delight. Fabulous paint-work. great chrome and a wonderfully fresh interior compliment a car that is mechanically as sweet and tight as they come. With show-winning potential. this is not your average car. Interested? Then read on…

Much has been written about the MGB over the years and it is to many. the ultimate British classic sports car. Still within the reach of most to buy and afford to run. it is sensible vintage motoring with terrific Club support and a great parts and specialist network. Of course. last year. the marque celebrated it's 50th Anniversary of the MGB itself and interest in this model is consequently on a current high. The GT actually entered production some 3 years later than the Roadster but still ran the trusted 1798cc “B” series engine with overdrive manual gearbox (automatic was a rare but unpopular option) and proper 2+2 coupe configuration with useful hatchback. Much more practical than the Roadster. the GT could adequately transport a family of four with luggage and was capable of 105mph where limits permitted.

Our car was supplied new through University Motors Ltd. in April 1971. A genuine home market car. the Heritage Certificate confirms that it was fitted from the factory with Rostyle wheels. a heater. front seat-belts. heated rear window and Overdrive. Sadly we no very little of the car's early history other than it is a very low-owner example with just 3 registered keepers up to 2006 (35 years). Indeed. from what we understand. it was at the end of this period that the car was substantially restored. re-painted and mechanically rebuilt. The quality of the work suggests that it was undertaken by a marque specialist with excellent panels and superb paint-work with a deep lustre. Mechanically too. it is very impressive. Possibly the quietest “B” Series I have come across and yet so responsive.

In 2008. the car was subsequently acquired by a true enthusiast who evidently recognising the value of this car. continued to improve it with a further £1500 invested in detailing over the next 4 years. This included a full brake overhaul with new master cylinder. callipers and pads. full stainless steel exhaust system. fuel pump. tyres and battery. New windscreen rubbers were sourced and fitted front and rear. a new aerial installed and new back bumper completed the external “look”. Under the bonnet. detailing continued with alloy rocker cover. new hoses. new accelerator cable and general cleaning.

The car today presents to show-standard and genuinely drives better than any other MG (of any variant) I have ever driven. Having just enjoyed a 30-mile trip south through the Wiltshire countryside. I would have gladly carried on to the coast. Indeed. it would be a wonderful car for a continental tour. Overdrive switches in and out smoothly and quickly allowing for surprisingly relaxed high-speed driving whilst through the twisty lanes. the car feels beautifully balanced with great road-holding.

With the benefit of a Heritage Certificate. the car comes with comprehensive history for the past 5 years and some old MOT Certificates. It benefits from a current Certificate to April 2014 and is taxed (albeit it is tax exempt).

A very special little car. You may have a job getting the keys off me!
