1952 Jowett Jupiter

The Jowett Jupiter was produced in Idle. near Bradford. West
Yorkshire. The car was launched at the London Motor Show in October
1949; continuing in production until 1954. An initial 75 chassis
were supplied to external coachbuilders such as Stabilimenti
Farina. Ghia. Abbott of Farnham and others in the UK. The high cost
of these bodies. for what was only a 1500cc car. obliged Jowett to
build their own complete cars. The Jowett factory made 731 Mk. I
and 94 Mk Ia cars. The Mk. Ia came out in late 1952 with a little
more power (63 bhp) and an opening lid to a boot of larger
capacity. The Jupiter achieved competition success with a
record-breaking class win at the 1950 Le Mans 24 Hour race. a class
1-2 in the 1951 Monte Carlo International Rally. an outright win in
the 1951 Lisbon International Rally and a class 1-2 in a gruelling
four hour sports car race on the public road circuit at Dundrod. br/>Northern Ireland in September 1951. This was a resurrection of the
famous Ulster Tourist Trophy Race of 1928-1936 previously run on
the 13. 7 mile Ards circuit. Le Mans was again class-won in 1951 and
1952. and lesser events were taken in 1952 but by 1953 newer. br/>faster cars were proving a match for the Jupiter which was. after
all. a well-appointed touring car first and foremost.


This stunning 1952 Jowett Jupiter was purchased by the vendor
three years ago from Martyn King who played football for Colchester
United as a striker from 1959 to 1965. chalking up the club's
record of most goals; 130 and six hat-tricks. Martyn King owned
this Jupiter for about thirteen years. regularly taking the car on
rallies and in the late 2000's he had a body-off restoration
carried out which was completed in 2009 during which. he had the
dash board replaced and a rally meter fitted. More recently. the
current owner has carried out further restoration and improvements;
these include renewing and realigning the off-side torsion bar. br/>fitting new Monroe shock absorbers to the front suspension. br/>replacing the rear wheel cylinders. repairing the hand brake. br/>having the carburetors overhauled. fitting a new fuel pump and
petrol flow regulator. having all the instruments sent to a
specialists for cleaning. repair and re-calibration. having the
dashboard and door capping coated with a burr walnut finish. br/>relocating the horn switch and the semaphore indicator switch from
under the dash board and repairing the driver's door window
mechanism. This Jowett Jupiter is finished in primrose yellow with
biscuit leather seats and comes supplied with a V5C registration
document. an certificate issued by a MoT test center dated 25th
April 2013. a buff log book. a file containing the
photographs of the body-off restoration. handbooks and parts
manuals. This Jupiter has been prepared for rallying in and around
Europe and would not need much more work to prepare it for the
intercontinental rallies; but just the removal of the anti-roll bar
gives the car nice clean lines to make it ideal for cruising around
on a nice summer evening. It is very rare that one of these cars
ever comes to the market and even rarer to have the opportunity to
purchase one so well prepared.
