The matching numbers MK II in this configuration was the fastest sedan in the world in the early 1960's. It is often retrospectively referred to as the "BMW M5 of the sixties". In addition to being family cars. these sedans with the powerful 3. 8 XK engine and 4 wheel disc brakes were also raced by the famous Formula 1 drivers of the era including Graham hill. Mike Hawthorne. Stirling Moss and others. Of the 15000 Left hand drive (LHD) models that were manufactured. most were shipped to the US and had automatic transmissions and in many cases disc wheels and/or the smaller 3. 4 or 2. 4 engine. Consequently matching numbers surviving LHD 4 speed overdrive 3. 8 liter cars with wire wheels are relatively rare and desirable. NADA values this configuration 30% higher than automatic transmission cars.   he current average NADA value for a matching numbers car configured as this one is is $45. 10.

HISTORY

216709DN is a lovely classic Jaguar. not a hangar queen. but a high level driver with a harmonious blend of restoration and patina. Although titled as a 1962 model. it was built March 15. 1961 and dispatched from the factory on March 22. 1961 making the car over 51 years old. It was originally sent the the main Canadian distributor. Jaguar Cars of Canada. and initially sold to Mr. E. Sawchuer of Heath Park. Saskatchewan Canada. At an unknown date based on verbal history. an owner in Vancouver. B. C in Canada subsequently acquired the car. He undertook a restoration in the late 80s and early 90s. During the 90s he took sick. and in the expectation of eventual recovery commissioned technicians from Jaguar in Seattle to professionally and correctly place the car in storage in Vancouver. He did not recover and passed away and the previous owner acquired the car from his estate. Also Canadian. and owner of a restoration shop in Port Coquitlam. British Columbia. he brought the car back to life from hibernation. His wife loved it and it soon became hers as a daily driver for from 2004 through 2008. I bought it from her in Canada in August of 2008 and formally imported it to the United States. It has been driven continuously since then and never been off the road with the exception of moderate periods for extensive mechanical maintenance and some upholstery restoration. This car is in very original condition and configuration. The car has a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT) certificate.   This car is a fantastic driver. and I use it regularly.

SERVICE HISTORY

216709DN is accompanied by detailed service history since I have owned it (2008). In addition to the documented work performed during my stewardship. it is evident from condition and performance that although not documented. considerable maintenance & rebuild were performed on most of the cars mechanical systems over the past 20 years.

MILEAGE

The indicated mileage reading at this writing was about 04200. This is definitely incorrect. When I bought the car the speedometer was among the only instruments not functioning. It was replaced with a (non zeroed) speedometer refurbished and repaired by Foreign Speedo of San Diego. It is unknown when the original speedometer stopped therefore it is not realistic to estimate the mileage.

ENGINE & CLUTCH

The car is driven regularly and runs and looks great. Oil pressure is in excess of 50 lbs hot. It pulls extremely well and runs very smoothly. It leaks the about expected amount for a 3. 8 in the region of the rear seal. although it is not an issue with the car. It does not smoke.

The clutch. pressure plate and throw-out bearing were replaced in late October 2012. New master and slave cylinders were fitted in October 2011.   The incorrect XJ6 exhaust manifolds shown in the photos that came with the car when I bought it. were left in place given that they are totally compatible with new down pipes with the current exhaust system which is in excellent condition. They can be replaced with a set of correct  (recently jet-hotted) manifolds. acquired subsequently. which also accompany the car. however this will require fitting a new compatible exhaust system. )

With the engine out during the clutch replacement. the opportunity was taken to reseal the transmission. replace all of the front brake hoses and clean and detail the engine.

COOLING SYSTEM

In stock configuration (with no auxiliary fans) the car runs with the temperature gauge directly straight up in the middle. When the temperature exceed 90 F or even 100 as it sometimes does in Boulder. the needle moves to the right about 1/3 the way between center and the red line. It has never reached the red in the 5 years I have owned it. nor has it ever overheated. The water pump and all of the water hoses and belts were replaced in November 2008.

GAS TANK & FUEL SYSTEM

The gas tank. all fuel lines. fuel gauge an electric fuel pump all function. as they should. The original twin SU carburetors are installed. The additional solenoid controlled cold-start mini-carburetor provides instant starting at all temperatures.

CHARGING SYSTEM

The car is in original positive ground form with a generator and voltage regulator that function flawlessly.

TRANSMISSION & DRIVE TRAIN

The car has the original Moss gearbox with non-synchronized 1st gear joined to the Laycock de Normanville overdrive. The overdrive works flawlessly and combined with the 3. 8 torque makes the car very long legged. The Moss gearbox functions as they usually do. As previously mentioned the transmission was resealed during the clutch service.

STEERING. SUSPENSION & DRIVE TRAIN

·     The steering unit is stock and functions as well as the design allows it;

·     The front and rear shocks were replaced in 2011;

·     New rear elliptical springs were also fitted in the spring of 2011;

·     New hubs and wheel bearings were fitted in 2010;

·     The steering wheel with the crack opening that appears in the video clip and some photos has been replaced with a refurbished one. and the center horn push Bakelite piece with the emblem has been replaced with a hard to find NOS part.

BRAKES

·     New master brake cylinder in September 2008;

·     All new brakes – August 2010;

·     New rear rotors – August 2010.

BODY

Inspections have indicated that 216709DN has no evidence of having been crashed. The original color according to the JDHT was Opalescent Dark Green. Only after an extensive search were remnants of this color found in the deep recesses of the trunk. It was apparently converted to silver when restored in the late 1980s. or early 1990s. The color change was apparently extremely well done by professionals. The paint is in extremely good condition given that it is not a hangar queen.

The car is driven regularly therefore it does have some minor chips and scratches.   In the spring of 2013 it completed several 150+ mile days. including a high mountain drive with the Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club in their annual “dust off” drive in May.

GLASS

The glass is all lightly tinted and in excellent and apparently original condition. It is likely the windshield was replaced at some point.

SEATS & INTERIOR

Part of the original maroon interior that was still in the car when I bought it has been brought back to life. The door panels. console sand seat backs were in good faded but good condition and have been re-dyed to maintain the original patina of the car. The seats. headliner and carpet have been replaced with OEM spec kits. All of the welts and rubber have been replaced. The wood is in good condition and had been refinished with polyurethane varnish. The interior handles. and switches are all in good condition. The trunk has been restored with hardura mat and panels to OEM specification. A hard-to-find NOS horn push was located and installed in December 2011

WHEELS & TIRES

New Vredestein radial tires were purchased in July 2010 and now have about 3500 to 4000 miles on them mounted on Series II E-Type 72 spoke chrome rims. The original curly-hub painted wire wheels in good condition are available.

CHROME

The chrome and stainless steel are in generally excellent condition with only extremely minor pitting on the door handles and taillights.

ELECTRICS

Well it's Lucas………… and the harness is original. however everything works except the clock. The right Lucas Fog Ranger driving light sometimes flickers. The speedometer was rebuilt by Foreign Speedo. of San Diego. in the summer of 2009 and works flawlessly as do the rest of the instruments except the clock. The toggle switches all function as they should. The headlights. running lights. directional and stoplights all function properly. Being a Canadian car. the Lucas Fog Rangers are original equipment. The battery was new in 2010.

RADIO

The car is equipped with the original positive ground AM radio and it works.
