Alfa Romeo 2.0 Spider Veloce 1972

Still plenty of summer days left for you to buy and enjoy this 1972 Alfa Romeo Spider. I have been the proud owner since April 2008. and am reluctantly selling because I don't have the time to use her as much as I would like. If you've not come across the cars before. the original (Duetto) was introduced in the 1960s. This is a Series 2 car. with a different tail design (often called the Kamm tail). In their day. the cars were considered extremely stylish. with prices to match. comparable with the E-type Jaguar. This example has the Alfa 2 litre. 150 hp engine and standard five-speed gearbox - a rarity for the early 1970s. According to the "How Many Left" website. only 239 of these cars remain on the road in the UK. so it's a rare car; you're unlikely to see another one in the supermarket car park. No road tax to pay. and the classic insurance costs me less than £100 a year - although I am what they call a mature driver.

The car has a current tax disc (tax exempt) until the end of July 2014. and the MoT runs until 19th July 2014. It sailed through last time with no significant problems; there were six advisories. but these were things you'd expect with a 40 year old car. and they seem to change every year anyway. depending on the tester's whim! I have a continuous run of MoTs going back to 2006. and one isolated one from 1992-93. The V5 shows 8 previous owners. of whom I have managed to trace 5. going back to 1986. As you will see from the photos. the odometer shows 4525 miles. but I suspect this should have a "1" in front of it!

I believe the car has been restored twice in its life. once in the mid-1990s and again around 2004-05. I have a thick file of bills going back to 1986.  During my ownership. the car has had new carburettors. radiator. exhaust system. a complete brake overhaul including servos. nbsp;calipers. nbsp;discs and pads. ignition leads. carburettors. springs and dampers. headlamps. rear lamps. front bumpers. and many items of trim. The mechanicals have never let me down. and she always starts.

The bodywork is sound. as much work was done during the restorations. I had some welding done underneath early in my ownership. but nothing has been needs since. although the car would probably benefit from a fresh coat of Waxoyl or similar underneath if you plan to use it during the winter. The interior is looking good. after a winter in the garage spent tidying up the trim and rubber work. The hood is in good condition. and the rear window is clear. There is a period. Alfa Romeo-branded radio cassette player in the dash.

I like my cars to be usable and drivable. not museum pieces. so if you want a concours example. you'll need to look elsewhere - and pay considerably more. This car is largely original. but has some sympathetic additions such as electronic ignition. a clock in the cockpit. and electric screen washers. Both I and the previous owners have tried to keep the mods in period and out of sight as far as possible.
