I have very recently acquired this extremely rare old classic. It is a 1939 Rover P2. There were several variations from the mid 1930's through to 1947. This model is the desirable Sports Saloon which has a sliding sun roof.

The car is a rare model due to the body style. and what Rover called the 4 light model (number of windows. most had an extra window in the rear quarter).

To improve upon how rare this model really is. the majority of the 14hp models came with a 4 cylinder inline engine. but few. including this car had a 1900cc straight 6. This still developed just 14hp. but with a significant torque increase over the much smaller 4 cylinder.

The car has had 1 owner other than myself from new. who unfortunately passed away recently. leaving the car in my possession. The original registration of the car is CS 86. and may well still be valid for the car. yet I am unsure exactly how this works. as the car has not been on the road since 1956. It was last used for the previous owners wedding and was then parked in a barn. 6 months ago the barn collapsed. although it has not damaged the car any further than just old age and deterioration.

My original plans were to complete the restoration myself. but I run a full time business as a Mazda MX5 specialist and have taken on a few large projects and this one is certainly not what I am best at. so I feel that it would be better for someone else to take on the project who will have the time. money and skills to complete the restoration to the perfection this car deserves.

On to the good. the bad and the tatty.

Current condition is questionable. All 4 wheels are now moving freely. after very little effort to be honest. The car was parked in gear. so the rear wheels were initially stuck solid. but a little work out on the gear stick got the gears working and it is now able to find gears and neutral. which has freed up the rear wheel. Both front wheels freed themselves in the process of recovering the car to my workshop.

The steering works and seems smooth from lock to lock.

Windows and door handles still operate.

The paint all over is flakey. The chassis is in a very good condition for the age and for how much love it has lost over the past 50 years. There is one small rust hole towards the front of the chassis that I have found. but nothing seriously structural or too difficult to be repaired.

Leaf spring suspension is all still intact and working.

I believe I have 99% of the car. I am fully aware that there may be some small parts missing. but I am no expert. The steering wheel appeared missing. but has since been found in pieces on the floor inside the car.

One rear arch is still attached to the car. and is fairly rusty towards the bottom edge. but not too far gone to see the original shape and for repair. All the other wings were previously removed before storage and are in a much better condition with just flaking paint and some minor surface rust.

The interior of the car is the biggest concern for me. as it would require skills I do not have to restore. and is too far gone for me. The seats are very tatty. with just a few strips of the original leather remaining. The ash frame has rotted quite substantially. to the point that both doors on one side had to be removed before transporting as we feared they would fall off.

The plywood floor has rotten through. and the leather sunroof is now in tatters.

Tyres will all need replacing. although the spare wheel is present and in very good condition (including the tyre) as it has been stored in the original location. under a solid cover on the boot.

The pile of parts in the photo includes most of the missing parts from the car. Bonnet. wings. radiator. front grill. bumpers etc.

I doubt there would be many parts to source for a restoration. and I am very capable to get it mechanically sound and make the exterior look superb. but the wooden interior. ash frame etc is well outside of my comfort zone. I would like this car to go to someone who is capable of a proper restoration (even if that means giving my assistance with the mechanicals and body work) as I will not do it justice on my own with my time limits. fund limits and skill limits.

The car is based in Winchester so feel free to contact me for a look or for a good bit of history on her. I know the daughter of the original owner (now an elderly lady) and she has some fantastic stories involving this car.

If the car does not sell to the right person. I will reserve my right to withdraw sale. I DO NOT WANT THIS CAR BEING TAKEN BY A MUPPET. It needs to be restored. not hot-rodded. broken. bodged.
